🎄 Christmas in Craiova

Craiova Christmas Market

Opening soon

31 days until the market opens · 13 November 2026

2026 dates and theme announced by the city hall, checked 8 October 2026. Daily opening hours for 2026 have not been announced yet.

The market in Piața Mihai Viteazul runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with "Tărâmul elfilor" as this year's theme — about a fortnight earlier than the rest of Romania. When to go, what to eat, where it spreads to, and what the city has not announced yet.

The market, the zones, the party

1 · Piața Mihai Viteazul, Calea Unirii

Craiova Christmas Market, Piața Mihai Viteazul

The main market, around the fountains and the Administrative Palace — and the reason Craiova is on European best-of lists at all.

13 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027 · 2026 hours not yet published (2025: Mon–Thu 13:00–22:00, Sat–Sun 10:00–23:00)

This is the one. Craiova's market has twice been named the most beautiful in Europe in travel-media rankings, and unlike most such claims it survives contact with the place: the setting is a Belle Époque square with the Administrative Palace lit behind it and the fountains in front, and the city commits to a full themed build rather than a row of huts.

The 2026 theme is "Tărâmul elfilor" — the Land of the Elves. The city announced it along with the dates; previous editions have run themes such as the Nutcracker, and the decoration of the centre is finished a day or so before opening.

It opens on 13 November 2026, which is roughly a fortnight ahead of Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov. If you are planning a December market trip around Romania, Craiova is the one that is already open when you start.

Expect it to extend beyond this square: in recent editions it has also filled Piața Frații Buzești and the esplanade in front of the National Theatre, organised as themed zones.

2 · Strada Alexandru Ioan Cuza, five minutes from the square

The National Theatre esplanade

The overflow zone, and usually the quieter one — worth the five-minute walk when the main square is shoulder to shoulder.

Part of the same season · exact dates and hours follow the main market

Recent editions have spread the market across several zones rather than concentrating it, and the esplanade in front of the National Theatre is the most useful of the secondary ones: close enough to walk between in five minutes, far enough that it is breathable on a Saturday evening.

Whether it is used again in 2026, and with what, had not been published when we checked in October 2026.

3 · Piața Mihai Viteazul

New Year's Eve in the centre

A free open-air party inside a market that is still running — the season does not end until 3 January.

31 Dec 2026 · free · 2026/27 line-up not yet announced

The market does not close for New Year, which is the practical point: the stalls, the lights and the party are the same place on the same night.

The 2026/27 programme had not been announced when we checked in October 2026. Romanian cities have increasingly replaced fireworks with laser and drone shows, so do not assume fireworks.

Still to be confirmed

Still to be announced (October 2026): the 2026 daily opening hours, which secondary zones the market uses this year, and the New Year's Eve line-up. The 13 November – 3 January dates and the "Tărâmul elfilor" theme were announced by the city hall and reported nationally; we will reconfirm the hours in November, when previous editions have published them.

What to drink and eat

Vin fiert
Mulled wine, red or white, with cinnamon, cloves and orange — the drink of every Romanian Christmas market. Hot tea and hot chocolate are the alcohol-free alternatives.
Kürtőskalács
Chimney cake: sweet dough wound around a spit, roasted over coals and rolled in sugar, cinnamon or walnuts. Szekler in origin and Transylvanian by reputation, but it has long since colonised every Romanian market, Craiova's included — it is the queue you will smell before you see.
Cârnați olteneşti & pomana porcului
Grilled sausages and pan-fried pork with polenta and pickles — December is pig-slaughter season in Romania, and the markets cook accordingly.
Sarmale
Cabbage rolls stuffed with minced pork and rice, slow-cooked, served with polenta and sour cream. The Christmas dish at every Romanian table.
Cozonac
The festive sweet bread, swirled with walnuts, cocoa or Turkish delight. Buy a slice to taste and a whole one to take home.
Langoș
Fried dough, plain or with cheese, garlic or sour cream — heavier than it looks. Share one.

Where to warm up

An hour and a half outdoors is the realistic limit on a December evening in Craiova, where the problem is rarely the cold itself — January averages a high of about 2.5 °C — but the damp. Fog sits in the Jiu valley for days at a stretch and it gets into everything. The season is built around the room you walk into next, and in the centre they are all within five minutes of the market.

Coffee first. Patiseria Eugenia is on Strada Mihai Viteazul, which is to say thirty seconds from the stalls, and it is a patisserie as much as a café — the right place for a coffee and something sweet with cold hands. For coffee taken seriously, Coffee Story on Brâncoveanu and Bad Habits on Theodor Aman are both a short walk, and Kune on Lipscani is the quietest of the three on a Saturday.

A beer or a glass of wine. Craft on Eugeniu Carada is the best-reviewed in the city and pours local craft beer; Curtea Berarilor and The 20's are both on Traian Demetrescu, a lane two minutes off the square that is effectively Craiova's drinking street. For Oltenian wine by the glass rather than beer, see the wine page.

Dinner. Casa Ghincea on Madona Dudu is the city's reference point for Romanian food and takes a reservation seriously in December. Maestro and Ardelenesc Oșanu' are both on Strada Olteț in the old town, three minutes from the market. On Calea Unirii itself, Al Za'atar and Olive are the easy choices when nobody wants to walk any further.

Properly indoors. If the fog has won, the Art Museum is four minutes from the square, warm, and holds six Brâncuși originals including The Kiss — the single best hour the city centre can give you in bad weather. Check its hours by phone before setting off; it does not publish a dependable timetable online.

Frequently asked

When is the Craiova Christmas market in 2026?

It runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with "Tărâmul elfilor" (the Land of the Elves) as the announced theme. The 2026 daily opening hours have not been published yet; in 2025 the market was open Monday to Thursday 13:00–22:00 and at weekends 10:00–23:00. Reconfirm nearer the time — the city has published hours in November in previous years.

Why does Craiova open so much earlier than other Romanian cities?

It simply does, and has for several years. Thirteen November is about a fortnight ahead of Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov. In practical terms it means Craiova is the only major Romanian Christmas market already running in mid-November, which is the single most useful thing to know if you are planning a tour of several.

Is the Craiova Christmas market really the most beautiful in Europe?

It has twice topped travel-media rankings of European Christmas markets, which is where the claim comes from — it is a media ranking, not an official award. What is not in dispute is the setting: a Belle Époque square with the Administrative Palace lit behind it and the fountains in front, and a full themed build rather than a row of huts.

Is the Craiova Christmas market free?

Yes. Entry to the market and to the New Year's Eve party is free; you pay only for food, drink, rides and what you buy.

Where exactly is the market held?

The main market is in Piața Mihai Viteazul, on Calea Unirii. Recent editions have also used Piața Frații Buzești and the esplanade in front of the National Theatre as themed zones, all within a five-minute walk of each other. Which zones are used in 2026 had not been published when we checked in October 2026.

Is the market still open at New Year?

Yes — the season runs to 3 January, so the stalls, the lights and the free public New Year's Eve party are all in the same place on the same night. The 2026/27 programme had not been announced in October 2026, and Romanian cities increasingly use laser or drone shows rather than fireworks.

Where should I stay for the Christmas market?

In or beside the centre, so you can walk to Piața Mihai Viteazul and back in the evening. December weekends fill quickly. Craiova charges a tourist tax per person per night, collected by the hotel.
