Why Craiova's Christmas market opens before everyone else's

A fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brasov. The same full installation, at off-season accommodation rates, with a local crowd — the best-value Christmas market weekend in the country.

The claim

Craiova's Christmas market opens on 13 November 2026. Sibiu, Bucharest, Brașov, Cluj and the rest do not open until the last week of November.

That is a gap of roughly a fortnight, and for those two weeks Craiova has the only major Christmas market operating in Romania. It is the single most useful fact about the city's winter, and almost nobody writes about it.

Checked October 2026. The 13 November date and the 2026 theme, *Tărâmul elfilor*, were announced by the city hall and carried nationally. Daily opening hours had not been published.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Think about what a Christmas market trip actually requires. You need the market to be open, the lights to be on, and somewhere to sleep at a price you are willing to pay. In Romania those three things almost never line up, because every city opens at once, in the last week of November, into a demand peak that lasts until Christmas Eve.

Craiova breaks that. Between the 13th and about the 25th, the market is complete — full installation, full stall count, lights on, programme running — and the national demand has not arrived yet, because the rest of the country has not opened. Accommodation is still at off-season rates. The crowd is local.

You get the December experience at November prices, in November quiet. That is not a marginal advantage; it is the best-value Christmas market weekend available in the country, and it exists for about ten days a year.

Is it actually the same market?

Yes. This is the question people reasonably ask, and the answer is that nothing is held back.

The themed build is the point of Craiova's market — it is a designed installation along Calea Unirii rather than a grid of huts in a square — and the city finishes the decoration of the centre a day or two before opening, not progressively through the season. The Administrative Palace is floodlit from the start. The stalls are there from the start.

What is different in mid-November is the volume of people and, in some years, the event programme, which concentrates around the December weekends. If you are coming for concerts, come later. If you are coming for the market, come early.

What you give up

Honesty requires listing it.

It will not feel like Christmas yet. Mid-November is early, and if the atmosphere you are after depends on the rest of the world also being in December, you will notice.

The weather is milder, which cuts both ways. November averages a daily high of about 10 °C in Craiova against December's 3.5 — more comfortable for standing around, less atmospheric. See the month-by-month weather.

The event programme is thinner. The concerts and the big weekend draws cluster later.

Nothing else in the city is in season either. The Oltenia day trips are at the tail end of their good window and the mountain roads above Rânca are closing.

Why does Craiova open so early?

The honest answer is that we do not have a stated reason from the city, and we are not going to invent one. What can be said is that it has been consistent across recent editions rather than a one-off, and that the early opening is clearly treated as part of the market's identity — the city has leaned into the "most beautiful in Europe" media rankings and a long season is consistent with that.

Whatever the reasoning, it is dependable enough to plan around.

How to use it

Book before the 13th. Rates move on opening day. See where to stay for the market.

Come on a weekday if you can. The second week of the market, midweek, is as quiet as a working Christmas market gets anywhere.

Pair it with the museum, not with a day trip. In mid-November the Art Museum and the Brâncuși collection are the right second half of the weekend; the parks have turned and the roads out are getting cold.

If you want both Craiova and Sibiu, this is how you do it without doing the same trip twice — mid-November here, December there. The full comparison is in Craiova or Sibiu.

The practical summary

The market runs 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The best two windows in it are 13–25 November, for price and quiet, and 27 December – 3 January, when the lights are still up, the rates have collapsed and almost nobody is left. Everything between those two is the expensive, crowded middle.

How the rest of the Romanian calendar falls

Useful context, because it is what makes the Craiova gap visible.

Romanian Christmas markets cluster hard. Most open in the last days of November, several of them on the same weekend, and all of them close either on or shortly after 26 December. The national demand peak therefore runs about four weeks, from the 1 December holiday to Christmas Eve, and every city is competing for the same visitors on the same twenty weekends-worth of nights.

Craiova sits outside that on both ends: two weeks earlier at the start, and open to 3 January at the finish while most markets have already been dismantled. The season is longer, which spreads the same number of visitors over more nights, which is why it does not feel as crushed as its reputation would suggest.

If you are planning a market tour

People do this — several Romanian cities in one trip — and the order matters more than the route.

Start in Craiova in mid-November, because it is the only one open. Then let the others come on stream: the last week of November adds Sibiu, Bucharest, Brașov and Cluj more or less at once, and from there it is a question of driving distances rather than dates.

What does not work is doing Craiova last. By late December you will have seen four bigger markets and the smallest one will not land. Seen first, in an empty November, it is the one people remember.

Frequently asked

When does Romania's first Christmas market open?

Craiova's, on 13 November 2026. Sibiu, Bucharest, Brasov and Cluj do not open until the last week of November, which gives Craiova roughly a fortnight as the only major Romanian Christmas market running.

Is the market complete in mid-November or does it build up?

Complete. The city finishes decorating the centre a day or two before opening rather than progressively, and the themed installation, the stalls and the floodlighting are all there from the first day. What is thinner in mid-November is the event programme and the crowd.

What is the best time to visit the Craiova Christmas market?

Two windows. 13 to about 25 November for price and quiet, when the rest of the country has not opened and accommodation is still at off-season rates. And 27 December to 3 January, when the lights are still up, rates have collapsed and almost nobody is left.

What do you give up by coming in mid-November?

It will not feel like Christmas yet, the weather is milder — about 10 degrees by day against December's 3.5 — the concert programme is thinner, and nothing else in the region is in season either.
