The short version
Belgrade to Craiova is 368 km and about 5h20 by car, crossing at the Iron Gates. There is no sensible alternative to driving, and the drive itself is the best part.
- The route: Belgrade south-east along the Danube, cross at Porțile de Fier I, then DN6/E70 through Drobeta-Turnu Severin and across the plain to Craiova.
- The crossing: Gura Văii, Mehedinți county. The Serbian side is Đerdap I.
- Budget extra time for the border. Serbia is outside the Schengen area and outside the EU. This is a real frontier with real checks, and it is the one part of the day you cannot predict.
Measured 11 October 2026 with Google Routes from Piața Mihai Viteazul, no traffic, and it does not include time at the border. Re-measured once a year.
The border, which is the whole planning problem
Everything else about this trip is arithmetic. The border is not.
Romania and Bulgaria joined the Schengen area on 1 January 2025 and the land checks between them disappeared. Serbia is not part of that. Coming from Belgrade you cross an external frontier: passports, vehicle documents, and a queue whose length nobody can tell you in advance.
Porțile de Fier I at Gura Văii is the crossing, run by the Border Police sector at Drobeta-Turnu Severin, with Đerdap I facing it on the Serbian bank. It is a road crossing in international traffic — you cannot walk it.
The practical consequences:
- Do not plan a tight arrival. If you want to be at the market for the evening lights, leave Belgrade in the morning, not after lunch.
- Weekends and holidays are worse, and the fortnight before Christmas is a holiday period on both sides.
- Have the paperwork reachable rather than in the boot under the luggage.
- A day trip is unrealistic. Five and a half hours each way plus two border queues is not a day out; it is an endurance test. Stay the night — Craiova is cheap, and where to stay has the detail.

Why this drive is worth doing anyway
Because of the middle hundred kilometres.
The road from the Serbian border to Drobeta runs along the Iron Gates, the gorge where the Danube cuts between the Carpathians and the Balkan range. It is the most dramatic stretch of the river anywhere, the water is wide and slow and the cliffs come down to it, and you are driving beside it rather than over it. Most people who do this journey remember the gorge and forget everything else.
Drobeta-Turnu Severin sits at the end of it, 113 km from Craiova and the natural place to break the drive. Trajan's bridge was built here in the second century and the Roman piers are still in the water; the Iron Gates Region Museum explains the whole thing properly, and the castrum and the medieval fortress are within a short walk of each other.
One correction worth having, because half the internet gets it wrong: the Kinetic Fountain people post photographs of is in Drobeta, not in Craiova. If you came for it, it is here, on this road, and not at the other end.
Drobeta to Craiova: 113 km, about 1h50 on DN6/E70. Flat and fast after the gorge.
The Vidin alternative, and why it is not better
You might think of dropping south into Bulgaria and crossing the Danube at the Calafat–Vidin bridge instead. It does not help.
Belgrade to Vidin and then Vidin to Craiova comes to roughly 400 km against 368, and you still cross a non-Schengen frontier — Serbia to Bulgaria — so you gain nothing on checks either. The Iron Gates route is shorter, prettier and no more complicated.
The Vidin crossing is the right one if you are coming from Sofia rather than Belgrade; that is a different trip and it is covered in Sofia to Craiova.

By coach, and why we will not print a timetable
Coaches run Belgrade to Romania, usually via Timișoara or Bucharest rather than straight to Craiova, which makes this a long day with a change in it.
We do not quote departure times or fares on this corridor. Operators change schedules seasonally and without notice, and the aggregators that index them are frequently stale — a timetable we cannot date is worse than none. Check the operator close to your travel date.
By train and by air, briefly
Train: nothing useful. There is no direct service and the connections run through Bucharest, which is the long way round by several hours.
Air: nobody flies Belgrade to Craiova, and you would not want to. Craiova International (CRA) is eight kilometres east of the centre and is worth knowing about if you are coming from further west — Wizz Air operates it from a number of European cities.
What you came for
Craiova's Christmas market runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 in Piața Mihai Viteazul, free to enter, and it opens roughly a fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov. It has twice topped European best-of rankings. Why Craiova opens first explains the scheduling, and it is the reason mid-November is the shrewd time to come: a full market, no competition, and prices that have not moved yet.
The 2026 daily hours had not been published when we checked in October, and we are not going to guess them. The market page carries what has actually been announced.
Around it: where to eat near the market, the market with children, and getting there and parking — the last one matters if you have driven, because part of the centre closes for the stalls and the sensible move is to park once and walk in. Where to park in Craiova has the rest.
Make it a loop, not a there-and-back
This is the argument for the trip. You have already absorbed the border and the distance; spend one more day and the drive pays for itself.
From Craiova: Târgu Jiu 110 km, where Brâncuși's ensemble runs on a 1.5 km axis through the middle of town and has been on the UNESCO list since 2024. Horezu 113 km, a monastery on the list since 1993 and a pottery tradition recognised by UNESCO in 2012. Segarcea 29 km for the wine. Every distance on the Oltenia page we measured ourselves, with the date.
A sensible shape: Belgrade to Drobeta with a stop in the gorge, Drobeta to Craiova, a night and the market, then Târgu Jiu on the way back — the Brâncuși ensemble is more or less on the road home. Oltenia in three days sets out the longer version.
Costs and weather, briefly
Craiova is cheaper than Bucharest or Cluj for a room and a meal; the sourced detail is in what a Craiova trip costs. Allow for paid parking in the centre and for the tourist tax collected at checkout.
Winter here is fog, not snow — the Jiu valley holds low cloud for days and that is the defining feature of the season; see the weather month by month. Combined with an unpredictable border, it is a strong argument against driving back at night. Take the extra night.
