Târgu Jiu

Brâncuși's ensemble, on a 1.5 km axis through the middle of a town

From Craiova

110 km by road

1 h 50 min driving, no traffic

Measured from Piața Mihai Viteazul on 2026-10-08.

This is the reason to pair Craiova with Târgu Jiu rather than treat them as separate trips. The Art Museum on Calea Unirii holds Brâncuși's early work — the pieces he made before Paris, while he was still learning. Two hours up the road stands what he made at the end: the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss and the Endless Column, laid out along a single axis he designed in 1937–38 for the men who died defending the Jiu crossing in 1916. Seeing them in that order, in one day, is something no other pair of Romanian cities offers.

On the UNESCO list since 2024

Inscribed in July 2024 under cultural criteria (i) and (ii), as an ensemble rather than as separate artworks — the axis, the parks and the church between them are all part of the listing.

What to see

When to go

All year, and it is one of the few places that is arguably better in winter — bare trees open up the sightlines along the axis. Summer afternoons in the Jiu valley are as hot as Craiova's; go in the morning.

What we could not verify

The County Museum's own opening hours and ticket price are not reliably published online — check before you build a day around the indoor collections. The ensemble itself needs no checking: it is outdoors and free.
