The short version
Craiova's Christmas market opens on 13 November 2026 and runs to 3 January 2027, in Piața Mihai Viteazul and the streets around it. The announced theme for this edition is *Tărâmul elfilor* — the Land of the Elves. Entry is free.
The one fact worth building a trip around: Craiova opens about a fortnight before everyone else. Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov do not start until late November, so for roughly two weeks in the middle of the month this is the only major Christmas market running in Romania.
Checked October 2026. The dates and the theme were announced by the city hall and carried by the national press. The daily opening hours for 2026 had not been published when we last looked; the 2025 edition ran Monday to Thursday 13:00–22:00 and at weekends 10:00–23:00, which is a guide and not a promise. We will update this page when the city publishes the timetable, as it has done in November in previous years.
Where it is
The core of the market is Piața Mihai Viteazul, the square on Calea Unirii with the equestrian statue of Michael the Brave at one end and the Administrative Palace lit behind it. The fountains in front of the palace are part of the set-piece.
Recent editions have not stopped there. The market has also used Piața Frații Buzești and the esplanade in front of the National Theatre, organised as themed zones, all within a five-minute walk of each other. Which zones are in use for 2026 had not been published when we checked.
If you are arriving without a map in your head: everything is in the centre, the centre is walkable end to end in fifteen minutes, and you do not need transport once you are there. See getting around Craiova.

Why this one has a reputation
Craiova's market has twice topped European best-of rankings in the travel media. That is a press ranking rather than an official award, and it is worth saying so plainly — but the setting behind the claim is real.
Most Romanian Christmas markets are a grid of wooden huts dropped into a square. Craiova commits to a full themed build: a designed installation rather than a layout, running the length of a Belle Époque boulevard, with the nineteenth-century facades of Calea Unirii as the backdrop and the palace floodlit at the end of the axis. Previous editions have run themes such as the Nutcracker; 2026 is the Land of the Elves.
The second thing in its favour is scale relative to the city. Craiova is a quarter of a million people, which means the market is large enough to be a destination and small enough that you are not queueing for forty minutes to buy mulled wine.

When to go, and when not to
Mid-November, 13th to about the 25th. The best-kept part of the whole season. The market is fully open, the lights are on, and the rest of the country has not started — so the crowd is local rather than national, and accommodation is still at pre-season prices. If you can only come once, come now.
Late November to mid-December. The busiest build-up. The 1 December national holiday weekend is the single most crowded stretch of the year, and prices follow it.
The last two weekends before Christmas. Full, and expensive. Good atmosphere, bad logistics.
Between Christmas and New Year. Busy but different — more families, fewer day-trippers from out of town. The market does not close for New Year, so the free public Revelion party on the 31st happens inside it.
The first days of January. The lights are still up and almost nobody is left. The season ends on 3 January.
What it costs
Entry is free. What you spend is on food, drink, rides and whatever you buy — and compared with Sibiu or Bucharest, Craiova is the cheaper evening. We have written the detail up separately in what the Craiova Christmas market costs, with the figures dated.
Accommodation is the part that moves most. Rates jump on opening day — see where to stay for the market — which is the practical argument for booking before 13 November rather than after it.
What to eat
Mulled wine, kürtőskalács, grilled sausages, sarmale, cozonac, langoși. The full list, with what each thing actually is and which are worth queueing for, is in what to eat at the Craiova Christmas market.
One local note: Craiova is half an hour from Segarcea, and the mulled wine here has a better base than most markets manage.
With children
It works, with planning. The rides and the themed installations are the draw, the crowds after six are the problem, and the honest advice is to come early in the afternoon at a weekend. See the Christmas market with children.
Getting there
From Bucharest it is about 230 km — train from Gara de Nord, or the A1 and DN65/DN6 by car. See Bucharest to Craiova.
By air, Craiova International (CRA) is eight kilometres east of the centre, with Wizz Air flying most of the routes. See the airport guide.
Parking in December is the single most common complaint, and it has a real answer — see getting to the market and where to park.
What we do not know yet
We would rather tell you this than guess:
- The daily opening hours for 2026. Not published as of October 2026.
- Which secondary zones are in use, and what is in them.
- The New Year's Eve programme. Romanian cities have increasingly replaced fireworks with laser or drone shows, so do not assume fireworks.
Everything above that carries a figure carries the date we checked it. If you need certainty on the hours before booking travel, the city hall's own channels are the place to confirm.
