Craiova neighbourhood

Centre

Calea Unirii, Piața Mihai Viteazul and almost everything worth seeing, inside a twenty-minute walk. Stay here.

The short answer

Stay here. Not as a default — because the centre holds thirty of the city's sights, twenty-five of its restaurants, fifteen of its hotels, sixteen of its bars and almost all of its coffee, and because you can cross it on foot in twenty minutes. For a trip of two or three days there is no second contender, and the price difference against the outer districts is smaller than one taxi a day.

What it actually is

A grid of belle-époque facades built when Oltenian grain money was at its height, with Calea Unirii running through the middle of it as a pedestrian spine. At the northern end is Piața Mihai Viteazul, the main square, with the equestrian statue of Michael the Brave and, from mid-November to early January, the Christmas market that is the one thing Craiova is nationally known for.

The heavy hitters are all within four or five minutes of each other. The Art Museum occupies the Jean Mihail Palace of 1900–07 and holds six Brâncuși originals, among them The Kiss of 1907 and a student head modelled in 1898 — he learned to carve four streets away. The Oltenia Museum, its natural sciences wing and the Ethnographic Museum in Casa Băniei, the oldest building in the city, are the rest of the museum quarter. The Marin Sorescu National Theatre hosts the biennial Shakespeare festival that is the reason theatre people know this city's name, and the Romanian Opera and Oltenia Philharmonic are both here too.

Two green patches are inside the centre rather than outside it: the Alexandru Buia Botanical Garden, which belongs to the university, and English Park. The big one, Romanescu, is ten minutes south.

Eating and drinking

Casa Ghincea on Madona Dudu is the reference point for Romanian food. Maestro and Ardelenesc Oșanu' are both on Strada Olteț in the old town. Strada Traian Demetrescu, a lane two minutes off the square, is effectively the drinking street — Curtea Berarilor, The 20's and Fado are all on it, while Craft on Eugeniu Carada is the best-reviewed bar in the city. For coffee taken seriously, Coffee Story, Bad Habits and Kune.

Who it does not suit

Anyone driving. Parking in the centre is the one genuine annoyance — the pedestrian core means the hotel you book may be a four-minute walk from where you can leave the car, and on a December weekend the market makes that worse. If the car matters more than the walk, Calea București or Brazda lui Novac trade ten minutes of travel for somewhere to park.

Frequently asked

Where is the Centre, and how do I get there?

It is the centre: Piața Mihai Viteazul, the Administrative Palace, the Art Museum and the pedestrianised stretch of Calea Unirii are all within a few minutes of each other, and the whole area is flat. From the railway station it is about 2.5 km — twenty-five minutes on foot or a short taxi.

What is worth seeing in the Centre?

The best-known sights here are "Saint Demetrius" Metropolitan Cathedral, Church of Our Lady in Craiova and Oltenia Museum - Department of Natural Sciences. The full list, with opening hours and a map, is further up this page.

Where should I eat in the Centre?

Among the best-rated restaurants in the area are Bros Burger, SteSo Restaurant and Nolla Brunch. The ratings come from Google and are refreshed periodically — they are not paid placements.

Is the Centre a good area to stay in?

It depends what you want from it. The accommodation section above lists several options in the area, and the write-up at the top of this page says plainly who it suits and who it does not. The map at the foot of the page is centred on the Centre itself.

Where can I get a good coffee in the Centre?

Start with NAO'S BESTCOFFEE S.R.L. and Harvest Specialty Coffee. Craiova has a small but genuinely good specialty-coffee scene in the centre, and the classic cofetării (patisseries) are still the place for a cake — or papanași.

Where can I get a beer or a glass of wine in the Centre?

Start with Bavarian Corner and Fabrrica. Romanian wine (Fetească Neagră, Fetească Albă, Tămâioasă) is poured by the glass in the good wine bars, and local craft beer has grown fast in recent years.

Does the Centre have any nightlife?

Yes. Reference points in the area include Games District, Comitet and Motor X. The city's densest cluster of bars is still in the centre, along Calea Unirii and the lanes between Piața Mihai Viteazul and the National Theatre.

Nearest areas

Straight-line distance from the centre of this area. Inside Craiova most of these are a walk or one bus; out in Oltenia the road is always a good deal longer than the line, so use the measured drive times on the Oltenia page instead.
