Founded in the late fourteenth century, which makes it the oldest surviving monastic foundation in Wallachia, and sited better than any of them — on a rock shelf with a waterfall coming out from under it. During the Second World War the country's gold reserve was hidden in the cave behind the monastery, which tells you something about how defensible the position is.
