Horezu
A 1690s monastery on the World Heritage List, and a pottery tradition on another
From Craiova
113 km by road
1 h 57 min driving, no traffic
Measured from Piața Mihai Viteazul on 2026-10-08.
Hurezi is the largest and most complete monastic complex Constantin Brâncoveanu built, finished in the 1690s and the reference point for everything called "Brâncovenesc" since — the carved stone, the painted porch, the balance between Byzantine plan and Italian detail. The town below it has been making pottery for as long, and in a way distinctive enough that UNESCO listed the craft separately. One trip, two heritage listings, about two hours each way.
On the UNESCO list since 1993
Two separate UNESCO listings in one small town: the monastery on the World Heritage List since 1993, and the pottery craft on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2012.
What to see
The monastery church and its porch
The votive portrait inside shows Brâncoveanu with his family — painted while he was alive, years before the Ottomans executed him and four of his sons in Constantinople in 1714.
The pottery workshops in town
Working workshops rather than souvenir shops — the rooster motif, the cockerel's-comb slip-trailing, and the horn-and-needle tools the UNESCO listing names specifically. Several are on the road in from Craiova, before the monastery turn.
Making a loop of it
Horezu sits on the road that carries on to Polovragi and Baia de Fier. Pairing it with the cave at Baia de Fier makes a long but sensible single day out of two places that are each a little thin on their own.
When to go
All year. The monastery is a working one — services take priority over visitors, and the painted interiors are dim on an overcast winter afternoon.
