Segarcea
The Crown Estate cellars, half an hour from the city
From Craiova
29 km by road
34 min driving, no traffic
Measured from Piața Mihai Viteazul on 2026-10-08.
The closest thing Craiova has to a vineyard on its doorstep. The estate was one of the Romanian Crown Domains created in the 1880s, and the winery building went up between 1906 and 1908; after decades of decline it was taken over in 2002 and rebuilt. At twenty-nine kilometres it is the one trip on this list you can do on a weekday evening in summer — and the only one where the drive back is the part to plan around.
What to see
The 1906–08 cellar building
Built for the Crown Domains and still in use. The underground cellars are the part worth seeing; the above-ground estate buildings have been restored around them.
What is actually planted
Segarcea is unusual for southern Romania in how much of it is red — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Fetească Neagră — alongside the whites. It is the house red on most serious Craiova wine lists, which makes a visit a useful piece of context for the rest of your stay.
When to go
Spring to autumn. Harvest, from late August into September, is the busiest and the most interesting — and the hardest to get a place at short notice.
What we could not verify
Tasting and tour prices are not published online, and visits are by arrangement rather than drop-in — call ahead. If you are tasting, settle who is driving before you go: this is a thirty-minute drive on a county road, and Romania's drink-drive limit is zero.
