The short version
Stay in the centre, and book before 13 November.
Those are the only two decisions that matter. Craiova is small enough that "the centre" means everything within a fifteen-minute walk of Piața Mihai Viteazul, and the Christmas market opens on 13 November — the day accommodation rates stop being an off-season bargain and become a December price.
Checked October 2026. Rates move constantly and we do not quote them; what follows is the pattern, which is stable year to year, and the reasoning behind each recommendation.
Why the centre, and nowhere else
In a larger city you weigh price against distance. In Craiova you do not, because the distances are too short for the trade to be worth making.
The market, the restaurants, the bars, the Art Museum, Calea Unirii and the Old Town lanes are all inside the same fifteen minutes on foot. Staying two kilometres out to save a modest amount per night means taking a taxi twice a day in December weather, and arriving back at midnight from a market that sells mulled wine by the litre.
The exception is if you are driving and your hotel has parking — then being slightly out is a genuine advantage, because parking near the market is the single most common December complaint.

The honest price calendar
This is the part worth planning around, and it is Craiova-specific.
Until 12 November: off-season. The cheapest rates of the autumn.
13–25 November: the market is fully open and the rest of Romania has not started. Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov do not open until late November, so for about a fortnight Craiova has the only major market running — and rates have not yet caught up with demand from outside the county. This is the window. It is the same market, the same lights and the same theme as in December, with a smaller crowd and a lower bill.
Late November to 23 December: peak. The 1 December national holiday weekend and the last two weekends before Christmas are the most expensive nights of the Craiova year.
24 December to 3 January: busy, but differently — more families, fewer out-of-town day-trippers. The market runs to 3 January, so the New Year's Eve party happens inside it.
After 3 January: the cheapest month of the year begins. See the month-by-month guide.
What to book
The central four-star option is Ramada Plaza, which is also the default for business travel and therefore quieter at weekends than you might expect. Hotel Golden House and Prestige Boutique are the smaller central choices. Hotel Royal and Europeca sit slightly out from the core at lower rates, which in December is a reasonable trade if they have parking.

Where to stay nearby

Three things people forget
The tourist tax. Charged per person per night and collected by the property, not included in the rate you booked online. It is small, but it surprises people at checkout.
Whether breakfast is included, which matters more in December than in July: at eight in the morning in a Craiova winter, walking out to find breakfast is a worse idea than it sounds. The cafés open from seven on weekdays, but not all of them.
Heating and windows. Craiova's December is damp and grey rather than crisp. A room facing a courtyard is quieter than one facing Calea Unirii during market season, and on a Saturday night that is not a small difference.
If you are coming for one night
Arrive in the afternoon, check in, do the market in the early evening before the crowd thickens, eat dinner off the market at about nine, and give the next morning to the Art Museum before you leave. That is a complete and unhurried Craiova visit, and it needs exactly one night.
If you have two, the second belongs either to Romanescu Park or to a day out in Oltenia — though in December the monasteries are cold and the mountain roads are closing, so the park is the better bet.
Getting there without a car
Craiova station is twenty-five minutes' walk east of the market, and the airport is eight kilometres east with Wizz Air on most routes. Both make a car-free December weekend straightforward — see Bucharest to Craiova and Craiova without a car.
Apartments versus hotels
Craiova has a deep short-let market, largely because of the university and the business traffic, and in market season it is worth considering for a specific reason: a flat in a central block is frequently better value than a hotel room at December rates, and it comes with the one thing a hotel room does not, which is somewhere to put wet coats and warm up without going back out.
The trade is service. If you want breakfast, a front desk at midnight and someone to call when the heating argues with you, take the hotel. If you are two couples or a family and you are going to be out most of the day anyway, the flat usually wins on both space and price.
What to check before booking a flat in December: that the heating is central rather than electric convectors, which in a Romanian block is the difference between warm and expensive; that the building has a working lift if you are above the third floor; and that the address is genuinely central rather than described as central.
The one night that is different
New Year's Eve. The market stays open to 3 January and the free public party is held inside it, which means central accommodation on 31 December behaves differently from the rest of the season: it books earlier, it costs more, and the street noise lasts until the small hours.
If you are coming specifically for Revelion, book months rather than weeks ahead, and take the courtyard-facing room rather than the one with the view.
