The short version
Sofia to Craiova is four to five hours by car, and there are two ways to cross the Danube. Google will send you the short way. We think you should take the long one.
- Via the Calafat–Vidin bridge — 296 km, about 4h55. A motorway-grade toll bridge that is open whatever the river is doing.
- Via the Bechet–Oryahovo ferry — 260 km, about 4h15 on paper. Thirty-six kilometres and forty minutes shorter, and the one that strands people.
Measured 11 October 2026 with Google Routes from Piața Mihai Viteazul, no traffic. Re-measured once a year. Ferry and coach timetables we do not quote, because we cannot date them reliably — see below.
One thing that changed and most pages have not caught up with: since 1 January 2025 Romania and Bulgaria are both full members of the Schengen area, and checks on people at the land border were lifted. The queue that used to define this drive is gone.
Why the bridge, not the ferry
The ferry route looks better on every mapping app, because an app measures tarmac and does not measure risk.
The Bechet–Oryahovo crossing is a genuine ferry — cars, buses and foot passengers, fifteen to twenty minutes on the water — and it has a documented habit of stopping. It was suspended in August 2025 because the Danube was too low, and again in December 2025 because of wind. Those are the two suspensions that made the news; they are not the only ones.
Here is why that matters more than forty minutes. Bechet is a small Danube port at the end of DN55, sixty-seven kilometres south of Craiova. If you arrive and the ferry is not running, there is nothing there to wait in and no second boat. The nearest alternative is the bridge at Calafat, which from Bechet means driving eighty kilometres west along the river on secondary roads. A forty-minute saving becomes a two-hour loss, and in December it happens in the dark.
The Calafat–Vidin bridge has been open since 2013 and does not care about the water level. It is the dependable crossing, and from Vidin the road to Sofia is 197 km of ordinary main road.
Take the ferry if the day is calm, you have checked that it is running, and you enjoy a river crossing — it is a pleasant twenty minutes and Bechet is a quiet place to stop. Take the bridge otherwise, and certainly if you are driving in winter, driving to a schedule, or driving with children who will not forgive you.
Places in this piece
The bridge route, in order
Sofia to Vidin: 197 km, about 3h20. North-west out of the capital, then the road up to the Danube. Unremarkable driving.
The bridge. Vidin to Calafat, tolled, a few minutes.
Calafat to Craiova: 88 km, about 1h20, on DN56/E79 straight up through the Dolj plain. Flat, fast and dull — which in winter is exactly what you want.
Worth the stop: Calafat has the Marincu Palace, an eclectic turn-of-the-century house built by a local landowner and now the town museum. It is the same architectural moment as Craiova's Calea Unirii, transplanted to a river town. Twenty minutes if you are in a hurry, an hour if you are not.
Where you arrive, and where to put the car
Craiova's centre is compact and the market sits in the middle of it, which is good news for walking and awkward news for parking. In December part of the centre is closed for the stalls.
The practical answer is the one locals use: park once, on the ring or in a garage, and walk in. The centre is fifteen minutes end to end. Street parking in Craiova is paid; the detail, including which garages take cards and which do not, is in where to park in Craiova, and the market-specific version is in getting to the market and parking.
If you are staying the night, pick a hotel with its own parking and leave the car there until you go home. Where to stay has the city by area, and the December-specific advice — book before the 13th — is in accommodation for the Christmas market.

Why Sofia should care about Craiova in November
Because of the calendar, and nobody else is pointing this out.
Craiova's Christmas market opens on 13 November 2026 and runs to 3 January 2027. That is roughly a fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov — Craiova is the first major Romanian market of the season, and the reasons are in why Craiova opens first.
For somebody in Sofia, that fortnight is the whole argument. From 13 to about 25 November, Craiova has a full market, Christmas lights and mulled wine, and it is the only Romanian city that does. Prices have not moved yet. The market has twice topped European best-of rankings, so this is not a consolation prize — it is the real thing, two weeks early, five hours from home.
The 2026 daily opening hours had not been published when we checked in October. We say so rather than inventing them; the market page carries whatever has actually been announced.
By coach, and why we will not print a timetable
Coaches run between Sofia and Craiova, usually with a change, and they are cheap.
We are not going to quote departure times or fares. Operators on this corridor change their schedules seasonally and without notice, and the aggregator sites that index them are frequently out of date — printing a timetable we cannot date would be worse than printing nothing. Check the operator directly, close to your travel date.
What we can tell you is the shape of it: it is slower than driving, it is much slower if the connection is poor, and it drops you at the bus terminal rather than in the centre. If there are two or more of you, the car wins on both time and money.
By train, honestly
There is no useful direct rail connection between Sofia and Craiova. The geography is against it — the Danube is in the way and the lines on either side were not built to meet.
If you want to arrive by train, the realistic version is to reach Craiova from inside Romania. Craiova station is in Piața Constantin Brâncuși, twenty-five minutes' walk east of the centre or a few minutes by taxi, and the Bucharest line is a good one — see Bucharest to Craiova.
By air
Not from Sofia. The two cities are too close and the market too small for anyone to fly it.
Craiova International (CRA) is eight kilometres east of the centre and matters if you are reading this from further afield — Wizz Air flies it from several Western European cities, and arriving at Craiova rather than Bucharest saves four hours and a hire car.
What to do once you are there
If this is a day trip, you will not get much beyond the market and the centre, and that is fine — one day in Craiova is the timed route.
With an overnight, two days adds Romanescu Park and gives you an unhurried morning in the Art Museum, which holds six Brâncuși originals including The Kiss. In bad weather that museum is the best hour the city has.
And if you are driving anyway, the thing most Bulgarian visitors miss is that Craiova is the gateway rather than the destination. Oltenia starts here: Târgu Jiu and the Brâncuși ensemble at 110 km, Horezu at 113, the monasteries beyond that. Coming from Sofia you are already half way.
Costs, roughly
Craiova is among the cheaper major Romanian cities for food and a bed, noticeably below Bucharest or Cluj for an equivalent meal or room. The honest version, with what we could and could not source, is in what a Craiova trip costs and the market-specific one in what the Christmas market costs.
Budget for the bridge toll, for paid parking in the centre, and for the tourist tax your hotel collects at checkout rather than at booking. None of them is large; all of them surprise people.
Driving in December, briefly
The Oltenian plain does not do mountain weather, and there is no pass between Sofia and Craiova. What it does do is fog — the Jiu valley holds low cloud for days at a stretch, and it is the defining feature of a Craiova winter far more than snow is. See the weather month by month.
Fog is a reason to leave earlier rather than a reason not to come, but it is a real reason not to plan a late-night return drive after mulled wine. An overnight is cheap here. Take it.
