The short version
Winter in Craiova is not a snow holiday. The Oltenian plain gets fog, not powder — low cloud sitting in the Jiu valley for days — and January averages a daily high of about 2.5 °C. Plan around damp and grey rather than around cold, and the season works well with children.
Three things make it work: the Christmas market opens 13 November, roughly a fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov; the centre is small enough to walk with short legs; and there is real snow two and a quarter hours away without moving house.
The market, which is the whole season
Craiova's market has twice topped European best-of rankings, it is free to walk into, and it sits in Piața Mihai Viteazul in the middle of the city.
Go in the first fortnight. From 13 November to about the 25th, Craiova has a full market and nowhere else in Romania does. That means lights and stalls without the queue, and room for a pushchair — which after the 1st of December is genuinely not guaranteed. The reasoning is in why Craiova opens first.
With children specifically, the market with children is the dedicated guide: what is actually there for them, when it is quietest, and what to feed them.
Go on a weekday afternoon if you can. The difference between 4pm Tuesday and 7pm Saturday is the difference between a nice hour and a crowd-management exercise.
Places in this piece
When the fog wins
It will, at some point. The indoor list, in the order we would use it:
The Natural Sciences museum — the department of the Oltenia Museum that children actually engage with.
Fantasy Park in Craiovița Nouă — the indoor play centre, and the honest answer when everyone needs to run and outside is not offering that.
The Art Museum — six original Brâncuși including The Kiss, four minutes from the square. With older children this lands; with a four-year-old it is twenty minutes, which is still twenty minutes. Ring first; it does not publish a dependable timetable.
Colibri, the puppet theatre, is the one aimed squarely at this age group, and it is in the same central cluster as the National Theatre and the Philharmonic.
The longer list is in Craiova in the rain.
Where to stay nearby

Clothes, honestly
The mistake people make is dressing for a mountain. It is not that cold — it is damp, and damp at two degrees goes through things that would be fine at minus ten in Brașov.
Waterproof outer layer, proper boots rather than fashion boots, and a change of socks in the bag. The market is outdoors and an hour and a half is the realistic limit before somebody needs a warm room, which is fine because in the centre they are all five minutes away.
Snow, if you actually want it
Rânca is the answer: a resort at about 1,600 m on the Transalpina, two and a quarter hours north. The temperature gap is the argument — in January the average high up there is around nine degrees colder than in the city, and the snow is real.
Rânca and the Transalpina has the practical version, and Oltenia day trips has the distances, every one measured from Piața Mihai Viteazul with the date.
Do not treat it as a casual afternoon. Two and a quarter hours each way in winter means leaving early, and it means checking the road rather than assuming.
Eating with children in December
The centre is dense, which is the single most useful fact. Where to eat has the full list and the restaurants listing shows what is open now.
Book for December weekends. The market pulls visitors from the capital and the good tables go. The rest of the year you can decide at the door.
For the market's own food, what to eat at the Christmas market; for something sweet and indoors fast, the patisseries along Calea Unirii and the cafés listing.
Where to stay, and when to book
Rates are at off-season levels until the market opens and rise once it does, so the fortnight from 13 November is the best value of the season. That argument, with the calendar, is in accommodation for the Christmas market.
Stay in the centre. Craiova is small enough that staying further out to save money means taxis twice a day in December weather, which is a false economy with children. Where to stay has the city by area.
New Year
The city does a public New Year's Eve in the square, and the market runs to 3 January — so the first days of January still have the lights with far fewer people in front of them. New Year in Craiova has the detail.
The practical background
A pharmacy at an awkward hour: three in the city are open around the clock, and the pharmacy page shows which are open at this moment. For anything urgent it is 112, and hospitals and emergencies has the addresses.
The rest of the winter picture — fog, daylight, what the month actually feels like — is in Craiova in winter and on the weather page.
