What 1 May actually is here
It is not a city occasion. In Romania 1 May is the day everybody leaves — to the seaside, to a garden, to the river, to a grill somewhere with family — and Craiova empties the way it does at Easter.
That makes it a strange day to be a visitor in the centre, and an excellent day to do what the locals are doing.
It is a public holiday, which has the usual consequences: offices shut, museums close or shorten, shops are on holiday hours. Craiova on public holidays has the full pattern, and the holidays page carries the calendar.
The one thing that defines the day
The grill. *Mici*, beer, and a day outdoors is the national format, and Oltenia takes it seriously. If you are invited to one, go — it is a better introduction to the region than any museum.
If you are not, the city's own version happens in the parks. Romanescu fills up, and it is the right kind of full: families, blankets, nobody in a hurry. The park guide.
What is on the grill matters less than people think, but the regional notes are worth having — and two of them correct things visitors arrive believing. Papanași are Moldovan, not Oltenian, and the famous Oltenian "raci" are dried peppers, not crayfish. What Oltenians eat.

Why the city empties, and why that is not a complaint
Oltenia is a region where most people are one generation from a village, and the long weekend is when that connection gets used. The same thing happens at Easter, and it is the single biggest difference between a holiday here and a holiday in a city that has become a destination.
For a visitor it means two things. The centre is yours, which is genuinely pleasant for a morning and slightly eerie by the afternoon. And the places that stay open are the ones that serve people who did not leave, which is usually a better meal than the ones aimed at visitors.
The weather, which is why the date works
Early May is the best moment of the Romanian year for being outside, and in Craiova specifically it is the window before the plain turns hot.
July and August average highs around 30 °C with no evening cool-down, because there is no altitude nearby to provide one. May has the light without the heat — see the weather page and Craiova in spring.
That is the whole argument for 1 May as a travel date here: it is the start of the outdoor season rather than the middle of it.

Where everyone goes
The Danube. Bechet at 68 km and Calafat at 89 km are the river destinations, and the first warm weekend is when they come alive. The Danube near Craiova.
The hills and the mountain. Rânca at 134 km is still cold at 1,600 m in early May, which is part of its appeal — and the adventure park is open weather permitting. Rânca and the Transalpina.
The vineyards. Segarcea at 29 km is close enough to be an afternoon, and the Crown Estate cellars are the civilised version of the day.
Out of the city generally. Oltenia has every distance measured from Piața Mihai Viteazul and dated, which matters because the roads are busy on this one weekend in a way they are not for the rest of the year.
If you are staying in the city
The parks are the event. Romanescu, the botanical garden, and the central chain — Tineretului, the English Park. Playgrounds and parks if children are involved.
Walk Calea Unirii in the morning while the city is still asleep. On a holiday the Belle Époque façades are as empty as they ever get, and the architecture guide explains what you are looking at.
Check before you count on a restaurant. Some close for the family day, some do their best trade of the spring. The restaurants listing computes live opening status, which is the only reliable way to know on a holiday.
Pharmacies stay open — three in the city are non-stop, and the pharmacy page shows which are open now. For anything urgent, 112.
Planning notes
Traffic is the real issue, not closures. The Friday before and the Sunday after are the two worst travel days of the spring on roads out of the city, for the same reason they are everywhere in Romania.
Book early if you want to be at the Danube or in the mountains. This is one of the weekends when accommodation outside the city actually fills; in Craiova itself it rarely does. Where to stay.
It pairs with the rest of May. If you have a few days, Craiova in spring and when to visit set out why late April to early June is the best stretch of the year here — and Craiova Days in the first week of June is the city's own festival at the end of it.
