The story
The reason theatre people outside Romania know Craiova's name.
The National Theatre runs the International Shakespeare Festival, which is biennial and which in 2026 filled eleven days — 21 to 31 May — with something close to five hundred events in more than sixty venues, a great many of them free and outdoors in squares and neighbourhoods. The next edition is 2028, and it is the one event in this city worth building a trip around; eleven days of festival in a city this size moves the accommodation market, so book early.
Out of festival years it runs an ordinary season, and it is one of three serious performing institutions within a few minutes of each other here — with the Romanian Opera and the Oltenia Philharmonic. For a provincial city that is unusual, and it is a large part of why February in Craiova is better than the weather suggests.
Programmes go up a few weeks ahead rather than a season ahead, so check close to the date. The theatre is named for Marin Sorescu, the poet and playwright, who was from Dolj. The underground car park beneath it is also the best parking in the centre — see where to park.
