The story
The main square, at the northern end of Calea Unirii, and the place the city's year turns on.
From mid-November to early January it holds the Christmas market — the 2026 edition from 13 November to 3 January 2027, free, themed *Tărâmul elfilor*. The opening date is the whole point: it is roughly a fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov, which for two weeks makes this the only large Christmas market open in Romania. Fully lit, and not yet crowded. New Year's Eve is here too, free and outdoors, with fireworks at midnight and the square filling from about ten.
At its head stands the equestrian statue of Michael the Brave, and he is not generic national decoration: he was Ban of Craiova before he became Prince of Wallachia in 1593, which is to say he worked here. The Bănia explains the office, which was the highest in Wallachia after the ruling prince.
The Administrative Palace closes the view at one end. Out of season the square is a flat pedestrianised space with terraces on it — pleasant, unremarkable, and four minutes from the Art Museum.
