Around Craiova

Târgu Jiu

110 km north, 1 h 50 min: Brâncuși's monumental ensemble, free, in the open air, and on the UNESCO list since 2024.

Why you go

For the only thing in Oltenia that is unarguably world-class. Brâncuși's Heroes' Way runs 1.3 km across the town on a single straight axis: the Table of Silence by the Jiu, then the Gate of the Kiss, then — through the central park and over the main street — the Infinite Column, cast in 1938 and 29.33 m high. It was all made as a First World War memorial, it is all free, it is all outdoors at any hour, and since 2024 the whole ensemble has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the Monumental Ensemble of Târgu Jiu.

Walk it in Brâncuși's order and at an unhurried pace it takes about twenty-five minutes. Most people see the Column, photograph it and leave, which misses the point entirely — the axis is the work.

Getting there

110 km, measured at 1 h 50 min by road. No useful public transport: the train takes most of a day with a change, so this is a car trip. See the Brâncuși page for the Craiova half of the story — six originals in the Art Museum, including The Kiss of 1907 and the head he modelled in 1898 while learning to carve four streets away.

What else is here

Tismana monastery is the big one — the oldest surviving monastic foundation in Wallachia, begun by Saint Nicodim in the 1370s on a rock above the gorge, with the waterfall behind the church. It is 20 km further on from Târgu Jiu, which makes a full day of it. The Park of the Infinite Column is the setting for the Column itself.

Sixteen restaurants and nine places to stay are listed here, which is more than any other town in this section: Terasa ANNA, Ambasador and Casa Vera for food, Pensiunea Antique and Hotel Goya Boutique for a bed if you decide one day is not enough.

Where should I eat in Târgu Jiu?

Among the best-rated restaurants in the area are Pensiunea Parâng, Renato HOUSE and Casa Vera. The ratings come from Google and are refreshed periodically — they are not paid placements.

Is Târgu Jiu a good area to stay in?

It depends what you want from it. The accommodation section above lists several options in the area, and the write-up at the top of this page says plainly who it suits and who it does not. The map at the foot of the page is centred on Târgu Jiu itself. Guesthouses out here are usually quieter and cheaper than hotels in Craiova, but you need a car: the train and the bus leave you a long way from what you actually came to see.

Nearest areas

Straight-line distance from the centre of this area. Inside Craiova most of these are a walk or one bus; out in Oltenia the road is always a good deal longer than the line, so use the measured drive times on the Oltenia page instead.
