Around Craiova

Horezu

113 km north-east, about 2 hours: a UNESCO monastery from 1690 and the potters whose craft is also UNESCO-listed.

Two UNESCO entries, one small town

Hurezi Monastery is the largest and most complete thing Constantin Brâncoveanu built — founded 1690, finished around 1697, and the building that gave its name to the whole Brâncovenesc style: carved stone, open porches, a painted narthex. It survived almost untouched, which almost nothing else of that period did, and it was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1993 under reference 597. It is a working convent, so entry to the courtyard is free, dress modestly, and services take precedence over visitors.

The second entry is not a building. Horezu ceramics — the cockerel motif, the comb-drawn patterns, the particular ochres — went onto UNESCO's intangible heritage list in 2012, and the workshops are in the village and along the road. Buying directly from a potter costs less than the roadside stalls and is the entire point of coming.

Getting there

113 km, measured at about 1 h 57 min. It pairs naturally with Peștera Muierilor at Baia de Fier on the same road — but not with Târgu Jiu, which is two hours away on the opposite side. Pick one or the other for a single day.

Staying and eating

Eight guesthouses, which is a lot for a town this size and tells you what the traffic is: Horezu Guesthouse, Pensiunea Andra's House, Pensiunea Dana. Proper Pizza & Pasta holds a 4.8 and Premier PALACE is the other option. Muzeul Vicșoreanu is the local ceramics museum.

On the opening hours

Do not trust what you read. Hurezi's own page has carried a placeholder e-mail address for years, and the aggregators disagree with each other about both the monastery and the cave. Ring ahead on the morning you intend to go, and treat any time you find online as a guess.
