The story
A stack of fifteen identical rhomboid modules and two halves, threaded on a steel core and rising to 29.33 m, cast in 1938 as a memorial to the people of Gorj who died defending the Jiu in 1916.
The crucial decision is at the top, and most photographs miss it: the column does not finish. It is cut off mid-module, so the eye continues the sequence past the physical end of the object. That is why it is called *endless* rather than *tall*, and it is a form Brâncuși had been working out in wood since the early 1920s — a form with a clear relationship to the vernacular carving of the county it stands in.
It is one third of a work, not a work. The Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss and the Column sit on a single straight 1.3 km axis across the town, and Brâncuși meant them to be walked in that order, west to east. Park at the Table end; nearly everyone does the opposite, because the Column is what the signs point at.
Free, in the open at any hour, and lit after dark — which is arguably the better visit, because the modules read as a repeating silhouette against the sky in a way they do not in flat daylight. Since 2024 the whole ensemble has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One thing nothing on site mentions: the column was dismantled, treated and re-coated in a restoration completed in 2000, which remains contentious among conservators. What stands is the 1938 object, restored — not a reconstruction, but not untouched. The full guide has the rest, and Brâncuși makes the case for reading it against the six originals in Craiova.
