Around Craiova
Rânca
134 km and 1,600 m up, 2 h 15 min: the mountain escape from a 30 °C city, and the foot of the Transalpina.
Why Craiova needs it
Because the city averages a 30 °C high through July and August and Rânca sits at about 1,600 m, where it runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler. That difference is the entire reason this place is on a Craiova site: it is the nearest genuine mountain air, 134 km and a measured two and a quarter hours away, and in August it is worth every minute of the drive.
It is also the southern foot of the Transalpina, the highest road in Romania. The high section over the Urdele pass closes for winter — usually from autumn until well into spring, by order rather than by date — so check before setting off in shoulder season, and ask the guesthouse which road is open on the day.
What is here
Ten places to stay, which is more than any other out-of-town area on this site and tells you it is a resort rather than a village: Cabana Terra, Cetina Ranca, Transalpina Rânca Complex Panoramic. Six restaurants, of which Restaurant Tara Ranca has over three thousand reviews. Parc Aventura Rânca is the summer activity and Pârtia M1 the winter one — a small ski area, not a destination resort, and it is better to arrive knowing that.
Peștera Muierilor at Baia de Fier is on the road up, which makes a natural pairing. Read the cave's own warning first: it publishes its timetable as a photograph of a printed sheet and the booking sites quote the ticket at four different prices, so ring on the morning.
Practical
You need a car. There is no useful public transport, the last stretch climbs steeply, and in winter you need winter tyres as a matter of law as well as sense. Take a layer even in August — 1,600 m at eight in the evening is not a 30 °C city.
