Around Craiova
Drobeta-Turnu Severin
112 km west, 1 h 45 min: Trajan's bridge piers, a medieval fortress and the Iron Gates. A full day.
Why it is worth the drive
Because of what is standing on the riverbank. Apollodorus of Damascus built Trajan's Bridge here in 103–105 AD to carry the Roman army into Dacia, and for a thousand years afterwards it was the longest arch bridge ever built. One pier still stands on the Romanian bank, in the open and free to walk up to, with its twin visible across the Danube in Serbia. The Iron Gates Region Museum next door explains what you are looking at, and the Fortress of Severin — the medieval one, 4,970 reviews and a 4.6 — is the other major site.
The town itself is the surprise: Promenada Crișan along the river, Pădurea Crihala above it, the Water Castle of 1913, and the Fântâna Cinetică — the kinetic fountain on Bulevardul Carol, which is in Drobeta and not, as half the internet has it, in Craiova.
Getting there and back
112 km, measured at 1 h 45 min on good road. Seventeen attractions, eight restaurants and eight places to stay are listed, which makes it the one trip in this section that can reasonably be two days rather than one. CRAFT Pizza has nearly seven thousand reviews; NEST Hotel & Restaurant holds a 4.8.
If you keep going
The Danube gorge west of here — the Iron Gates proper — is the most spectacular stretch of river in Romania, and it starts about forty minutes beyond the town. That is a second day, not an extension of the first.
