The story
Six Brâncuși originals, in one room, in a provincial city — the largest group of his work in any Romanian museum outside Bucharest.
Two of them do the work. A student head modelled in 1898, made while he was still at Craiova's School of Arts and Crafts four streets away: competent, academic, carefully observed, with nothing removed yet. And ***The Kiss* of 1907**, in which everything has been removed — two figures barely separated from the block, the features cut as incisions, the embrace read rather than depicted. Nine years apart, in the same room, and that gap is the whole argument of modern sculpture.
The building is half the visit. The Jean Mihail Palace, built 1900–07 on Oltenian grain money, with marble, Venetian glass and a staircase that was clearly the point of the ground floor. It opened as a public collection in 1908 as the Aman Pinacotheca and was renamed in 1954. The painting holdings run past eight thousand works, and they are a good provincial collection rather than a national one.
Go to the Brâncuși room first, while you are fresh. **Telephone before travelling specifically for *The Kiss*** — the museum does not publish a dependable timetable and the piece has been lent out for temporary exhibitions before. The full guide, and Brâncuși for the case for driving 110 km north afterwards.
