If you have three hours
Craiova is a natural stop rather than a destination for a lot of journeys — between Bulgaria and Transylvania, between Serbia and Bucharest, or on the way to the Danube. The centre is small enough that a short stop is genuinely worth making, which is not true of most cities this size.
The three-hour version, in order:
- Park once. The centre is fifteen minutes end to end and partly closed in December for the Christmas market. Where to park in Craiova.
- Calea Unirii, walked slowly, looking at first-floor level. Forty minutes.
- The Art Museum — six original Brâncuși including The Kiss, in a Belle Époque palace. An hour.
- Coffee or lunch within two minutes of where you finish. Breakfast in Craiova, where to eat.
That is the city's whole case, made properly, and it fits in a long lunch.
Ring the museum first. It does not publish a dependable timetable, which is true of almost everything here — museums in Craiova says so at length.
If you have one hour
Skip the museum and walk the street. Calea Unirii from Piața Mihai Viteazul and back, looking up. The Belle Époque façades were built within a single generation between roughly 1880 and 1914 — Belle Époque Craiova — and they are the thing nobody photographs.

If you have six hours
Add Romanescu Park: 96 hectares, a lake, a hippodrome and a suspended bridge, plus the Enchanted Castle and the zoo inside it. The park guide.
It is a short flat drive south of the centre and it is the thing most visitors regret missing. With children it is the obvious choice over the museum — Craiova with children.
Where Craiova sits on the map
This is the practical reason it works as a stop, with every figure measured 11 October 2026 from Piața Mihai Viteazul using Google Routes, no traffic:
- Bucharest 231 km, 2h35 — from Bucharest
- Sibiu 228 km, 3h44 — from Sibiu
- Sofia 260–296 km, 4h15–4h55 depending on whether you take the ferry or the bridge — from Sofia
- Timișoara 343 km, 5h08 — from Timișoara
- Belgrade 368 km, 5h20 — from Belgrade
- Cluj 401 km, 5h20 — from Cluj
Craiova sits where several of those cross, which is why it is a sensible overnight even when it is not the point of the trip.

What to skip on a short stop
The other museums. The Oltenia Museum's three sites are worth a morning when you have one, but on a three-hour stop they dilute the Art Museum rather than adding to it. Museums in Craiova.
Anything out of the centre. The block neighbourhoods where most of the city lives are genuinely interesting as context, and genuinely a waste of a short stop.
A day trip. Everything in Oltenia is an hour and a half to two and a quarter each way on national roads rather than motorways. There is no version of that which fits into a stop.
If you are stopping overnight
Stay in the centre. Everything above is walkable from it, and the city is small enough that staying further out means taxis. Where to stay.
It is cheap. Craiova is among the cheaper major Romanian cities for a bed and a meal, noticeably below Bucharest or Cluj — what a Craiova trip costs.
In the first half of November it is cheaper still, with the market already open — the fortnight from 13 November is the only time in Romania you get a full Christmas market at off-season prices, because nowhere else has opened yet. Why Craiova opens first.
If you are passing with time to spare
The honest answer is that a stop in Craiova is good and a day in Oltenia is better, and the region is why people come back.
Târgu Jiu at 110 km for the Brâncuși ensemble, UNESCO-listed since 2024; Horezu at 113 km, a monastery on the list since 1993; Drobeta at 113 km, where Trajan's bridge piers are still in the Danube; Peștera Muierilor at 119 km, where a whole genome was published in *Current Biology* in 2021.
If your route runs north–south you pass close to Horezu anyway, which turns a UNESCO monastery into a stop rather than a detour. The Oltenia page has every distance measured and dated, and three days in Oltenia is the version with time.
Practical for a stop
Fuel and a garage: car repair and ITP. A pharmacy at an odd hour: three in the city are open around the clock — pharmacies. Anything urgent: 112, and hospitals has the addresses. Public holidays close more than you expect: Craiova on public holidays.
