The story

The best thing in Craiova, and it is not a close contest. Ninety-six hectares, free, at any hour, with no gate and no ticket — there has never been one.

It was commissioned by Nicolae Romanescu, mayor of Craiova, who went to Paris, hired the landscape architect Émile Redont, and then entered the design in the 1900 Paris World Exposition before building it. It won a gold medal. Construction ran from 1900 to 1903.

That sequence tells you what it is: not a municipal green space that grew, but a single designed landscape, conceived whole by a professional at the moment Oltenian grain money could pay for it — the same money and the same decade that produced Calea Unirii and the Jean Mihail Palace. A hundred and twenty years on, the structure of Redont's plan is still legible on the ground, which is why it reads as coherent rather than accumulated.

What is in it: the lakes, with boats in season; the suspension bridge; a mock ruined castle, built as a ruin in the manner of the great nineteenth-century landscape parks, which people reliably assume is real; the hippodrome; Castelul Fermecat; and the zoo.

One practical thing that matters more than it sounds: in July and August, when the city averages a high of 30 °C, stay on the shaded paths and the lake edges rather than the open lawns — the park is big enough to get that wrong and spend an hour in full sun by accident. The full guide.
