Crama Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea

The best-known wine producer in Dolj, 29 km south of Craiova and a measured 34 minutes — which makes it the only genuine half-day trip from the city.

The vineyard was planted as one of Romania's royal Crown Domains: agricultural estates set aside by law in the nineteenth century to fund the royal household — state land whose revenue was assigned to the Crown, and run as model estates to demonstrate what modern methods looked like. Segarcea's assignment was viticulture, and that origin explains what you see on site: cellars built at a scale and to a standard a private nineteenth-century Romanian producer would not have attempted. It was nationalised after 1948 and the quality recovery is recent.

Ask for the Romanian varieties, not the international plantings — you can drink Cabernet and Merlot anywhere. Fetească Neagră is the indigenous red and the one that justifies the region: structured, dark-fruited, with a dried-plum note. Fetească Regală and Fetească Albă are the dry floral whites, and Tămâioasă Românească is the aromatic one, made dry or sweet depending on the producer.

Two practical things. Book ahead — the winery works by arrangement rather than walk-up, and Segarcea has one restaurant and no other attraction, so arriving hopefully means a 34-minute drive to a locked gate.
