Around Craiova
Segarcea
29 km south, 34 minutes: the former Crown Domain winery, and the easiest half-day out of Craiova.
The easy one
Twenty-nine kilometres, measured at thirty-four minutes. Of everything in this section it is the only genuine half-day: you can leave Craiova after breakfast and be back for lunch, which makes it the trip to take when the weather or the schedule has ruled out the long drives north.
Crama Domeniul Coroanei Segarcea is the reason. The vineyard was planted as one of the royal Crown Domains and the cellars date from that period; it is now the best-known producer in Dolj and the one Oltenian winery most people outside the region have heard of. Tastings and cellar visits need booking ahead — do not drive out hoping, because there is nothing else in Segarcea to fall back on. See the wine page for the wider Oltenian picture.
Also here
Zuican is the restaurant. That is the list, and the town itself is a working agricultural town rather than a sight — which is worth saying, because photographs of the cellar door imply a village that does not exist around it.
Practical
Designated driver, or do not taste. Romania enforces a zero-tolerance drink-drive limit and the road back is a main road. If tasting is the point of the trip, that is an argument for a hotel in Segarcea — except there is not one, so it is an argument for a taxi or a driver from Craiova instead.
