The story
The university's botanical garden, and the best-kept green space in Craiova after Romanescu — denser in planting, considerably smaller, and closer to the centre.
The two are complementary rather than alternatives. Romanescu is a designed landscape of ninety-six hectares, made for wandering; this is a collection, made for looking at individual things. If the big park was yesterday, this is the one to add.
It belongs to the University of Craiova and is named for Alexandru Buia, the botanist who founded it. That institutional ownership is why it is maintained to a standard a municipal garden in a provincial city usually is not.
April and May are its best months, and it is also one of the better answers to a July afternoon — the city averages a high of 30 °C that month and the planting here is dense enough to be genuinely cooler than the street.
