The story

The ski area at Rânca, and the honest description is a small one: modest lift infrastructure, a short season, and not a destination resort. Arriving expecting otherwise is the main way people are disappointed by Rânca.

That is worth saying plainly, because for skiing as the point of a holiday Romania has better answers further north. What Rânca is genuinely for is the altitude: at about 1,600 m in the Parâng it runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler than Craiova, which averages a high of 30 °C in July — so the strongest reason to come up here is summer, not winter. The full guide makes that case.

If you do come in winter: it fills up on weekends and over Christmas and New Year, so book early. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Romania, not a suggestion, and the final climb is steep. The high Transalpina over the Urdele pass is shut for the season by administrative order rather than by date — Rânca stays reachable from the south via Novaci, but you cannot cross. Ask your guesthouse which road is open on the day; they know, and the official information is thin.
