The story
The one place in Oltenia with a genuine claim on world science — and the one that publishes its opening hours as a photograph of a printed sheet.
The skull found here, Peștera Muierii 1, belonged to a woman who died about 35,000 years ago, and in May 2021 her entire genome was sequenced and published in *Current Biology*. Very few complete human genomes older than 30,000 years exist anywhere. Three findings matter: her genetic diversity was high, high enough that the migration out of Africa cannot have been the great bottleneck in human genetic history — that came during and after the last Ice Age instead; she is not a direct ancestor of modern Europeans but a predecessor of the hunter-gatherers who lived here until the Ice Age ended; and the long-standing assumption that her cranial shape meant extra Neanderthal ancestry was wrong — the genome shows a much smaller difference than the skull suggested.
There is no interpretive centre making any of that clear to you on site.
Practically: guided visits only, along roughly a kilometre of lit gallery, so you go when a guide goes rather than when you arrive, and in low season the wait can be long. It holds a steady 10 °C inside all year, which in August is a startling pleasure — take a layer anyway. Shoes with grip; lit gallery still means wet stone.
And telephone on the morning you intend to go. The timetable circulates as a photograph, the booking sites quote the ticket at anything between 5 and 20 lei with four different closing times, and there is no authoritative version to prefer. The full guide explains why this site refuses to print a figure it cannot source.

Where is Peștera Muierilor?
The address is 217030 Baia de Fier, in Rânca — outside Craiova itself, so allow for the drive.
What do I need to know before going to Peștera Muierilor?
Two things. It is visited only on a guided walk of roughly a kilometre of lit gallery, so you go when a guide goes, not when you arrive. And the published information is genuinely unreliable: the cave's own timetable circulates as a photograph of a printed sheet, and the booking sites quote the ticket at anything between 5 and 20 lei with four different closing times. Phone the cave the morning you intend to go. It stays around 10 °C inside all year — take a layer even in August.
Is Peștera Muierilor worth visiting?
It holds 4.6 out of 5 from 8,842 Google reviews — a strong score for a attraction around Craiova. Treat the rating as a starting point, not a verdict, and read a few recent reviews too.
