Around Craiova
Calafat
89 km south, 1 h 18 min: the Danube, the bridge to Bulgaria, and a town most people only drive through.
What it is
A Danube port and the Romanian end of the bridge to Vidin in Bulgaria, which is why most traffic through Calafat never stops. Eighty-nine kilometres from Craiova, measured at one hour eighteen.
If you do stop: the Municipal Park runs along the river and holds a 4.4 from nearly two hundred reviews, and the Marincu Palace is the belle-époque house that the town's grain money built, in the same decade and for the same reason as the facades on Craiova's Calea Unirii. Three restaurants are listed, of which Debarcader is the one by the water and Restaurant O.K. the one with 844 reviews.
The honest assessment
Calafat is a half-day at most, and it is the weakest of the six out-of-town areas on this site measured purely as a sight. What it is genuinely good for is two other things: standing on the bank of the Danube, which this far south is very wide and very quiet, and crossing into Bulgaria — Vidin is twenty minutes over the bridge, uses a different currency, and makes an odd and rather good second half of a day. Take a passport or an EU ID card.
For a southern Danube trip that is purely about the river rather than the border, Bechet is closer at sixty-eight kilometres.
