Is Craiova worth visiting?

Yes, for two or three days and for specific reasons: six Brâncuși, a 96-hectare park, the first Christmas market in the country. No, if you came for a medieval old town — go to Sibiu.

The short answer

Yes — for two or three days, for a specific set of reasons, and not for the reasons most Romanian city guides give.

Craiova is not Sibiu and it is not Brașov. It has no medieval core, no mountains at the end of the street and no square full of tour groups. What it has is a Belle Époque centre nobody photographs, six original Brâncuși in a palace, a 96-hectare landscaped park, the first Romanian Christmas market to open each year, and prices that are noticeably below Bucharest or Cluj.

If that sounds like your kind of city, it is a very good one. If you want a postcard old town, go to Sibiu — we would rather tell you that than waste your weekend.

What is genuinely first-rate

The Brâncuși. The Art Museum holds six originals including The Kiss, in the Jean Mihail Palace on Calea Unirii. Brâncuși studied here. An hour away at Târgu Jiu stands his monumental ensemble, on the UNESCO list since 2024 — a 1.5 km axis through a town, which is unlike any other sculpture you will see. Together they are a genuine reason to travel, and almost nobody does it. Brâncuși in Craiova is the route.

Romanescu Park. Ninety-six hectares laid out at the turn of the twentieth century, with a lake, a hippodrome and a suspended bridge. It is the best city park in Romania that nobody outside Oltenia mentions. The park guide.

The Christmas market. Craiova's has twice topped European best-of rankings, and it opens on 13 November — about a fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov. For two weeks it is the only full market in the country. That is a real, dateable advantage: why Craiova opens first and the market itself.

Calea Unirii. A long pedestrianised street of Belle Époque façades, built when Oltenia's landowners had money and spent it on French architects. It is the city's best hour and it is free: a walk along Calea Unirii.

What is good but not unique

The food is solid and regional — Oltenian cooking is genuinely not Bucharest's, and what Oltenians eat explains why. The café scene is better than the city's reputation: specialty coffee. The museums beyond the Art Museum are decent rather than remarkable.

Where to stay nearby

Live prices and availability on a map centred on this exact spot — hotels, apartments and hostels, so you can judge the walk from here rather than guess from an address.

What Craiova does not have

No medieval old town. The centre is nineteenth-century, not fifteenth. If that is what you came for, you will be disappointed, and we would rather you knew now.

No mountains in the city. The nearest real altitude is Rânca at 134 km, two and a quarter hours. Lovely, but it is a day trip, not a backdrop.

Winter is fog, not snow. The plain holds low cloud for days. Craiova in winter is honest about it.

Summer is hot and flat. July averages highs around 30 °C with no evening cool-down. How to escape the heat.

The real argument: Craiova as a base

This is the thing most people miss, and it is the strongest case for coming.

Craiova is the gateway to Oltenia, a region with more UNESCO than its reputation suggests and almost no tourism infrastructure competing for it. From the city, every distance measured and dated on the Oltenia page:

  • Târgu Jiu 110 km — the Brâncuși ensemble, UNESCO 2024
  • Horezu 113 km — a monastery on the list since 1993, and a pottery craft recognised in 2012
  • Peștera Muierilor 119 km — where a whole genome was published in *Current Biology* in 2021
  • Drobeta 113 km — Trajan's bridge piers still in the Danube, along the Iron Gates gorge
  • Segarcea 29 km — the Crown Estate cellars

You cannot do that from Bucharest in a day. From Craiova you can, and you sleep somewhere cheap with a good dinner. Three days in Oltenia is the itinerary.

Who should come

Yes if you like architecture nobody has photographed to death, you care about Brâncuși, you want a Christmas market without the crowd, you are using it as an Oltenia base, or you want a Romanian city break that costs noticeably less.

Probably not if you have three days in Romania total and have never seen Sibiu or Brașov, you want mountains from your window, or a medieval centre is the point.

Definitely if you are coming from Sofia or Belgrade — it is four to five hours from one and five and a half from the other, and far closer than Bucharest. From Sofia, from Belgrade.

How long

One day does the centre, the Art Museum and Calea Unirii: one day in Craiova.

Two days adds Romanescu and the park properly: two days.

Three or more is when Oltenia opens up, and that is when the trip justifies itself.

What it costs

Less than you expect. Craiova is among the cheaper major Romanian cities for a bed and a meal, noticeably below Bucharest and Cluj. The sourced version, with what we could and could not date, is in what a Craiova trip costs and on the prices page.

The first half of November is the cheapest moment with the market open, which is a combination no other Romanian city offers.

Frequently asked

Is Craiova worth visiting?

Yes, for two or three days. The reasons are specific: six original Brancusi works in the Art Museum, the monumental Brancusi ensemble an hour away at Targu Jiu on the UNESCO list since 2024, a 96-hectare landscaped park, a Christmas market that opens a fortnight before everyone else's, and prices noticeably below Bucharest or Cluj. It is not the right choice if you want a medieval old town.

Is Craiova better than Sibiu or Brasov?

Different rather than better. Sibiu and Brasov have medieval cores and mountains; Craiova has a nineteenth-century Belle Epoque centre, the Brancusi collection and a far better position for exploring Oltenia. If you have three days in Romania and have seen neither, go to Sibiu first. If you have seen them, Craiova is the more interesting second trip.

How many days do you need in Craiova?

One day covers the centre, the Art Museum and Calea Unirii. Two add Romanescu Park properly. Three or more is when the trip justifies itself, because that is when Oltenia opens up — Targu Jiu at 110 km, Horezu at 113, the cave at 119, Drobeta at 113.

What is Craiova actually famous for?

Brancusi, who studied here and whose ensemble stands at Targu Jiu an hour away; Romanescu Park, 96 hectares laid out around 1900; the Christmas market, twice top of European rankings and the first in Romania to open each year; and the Belle Epoque facades of Calea Unirii.
