The short answer
Timișoara if it is your first trip to western Romania. Craiova if it is your second, or if you are coming from Bulgaria or Serbia.
They are both big southern-ish Romanian cities with Habsburg-or-Belle-Époque centres and a university, and on paper they compete. In practice they are answering different questions, and the honest comparison is less close than the map suggests.
Timișoara was a European Capital of Culture in 2023, has three restored baroque squares, and is an hour from the Hungarian and Serbian borders. Craiova has six original Brâncuși, the best city park in Romania that nobody mentions, and the first Christmas market in the country to open each year.
Where Timișoara wins
The centre. Three linked squares — Victory, Union, Liberty — restored for 2023 and genuinely handsome. Craiova's centre is a single long street of Belle Époque façades, Calea Unirii, which is lovely and much less complete.
International access. Timișoara's airport has far more routes. Craiova's is real — Wizz Air flies London, Madrid, Barcelona, Italy and Germany — but it is smaller.
Scale of the scene. More bars, more restaurants, more of everything, because more people and more students.
If what you want is a handsome European city centre to walk around for two days, Timișoara does it better. We would rather say that than pretend otherwise.

Where Craiova wins
Brâncuși, and it is not close. The Art Museum holds six originals including The Kiss, in a Belle Époque palace, in the city where he studied. An hour north at Târgu Jiu stands his monumental ensemble — a 1.5 km axis through a town, on the UNESCO list since 2024. There is nothing comparable in Timișoara, or anywhere else. Brâncuși in Craiova.
The park. Romanescu is 96 hectares laid out around 1900, with a lake, a hippodrome and a suspended bridge. Timișoara has pleasant parks; this is a different category. The park guide.
The Christmas market timing. Craiova's opens 13 November, roughly a fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov, and it has twice topped European rankings. For two weeks it is the only full market in Romania — a dateable advantage no other city has. Why Craiova opens first.
Price. Craiova is noticeably cheaper for a bed and a meal. What a Craiova trip costs and the prices page.
Position, if you are coming from the south. From Sofia it is four to five hours (how); from Belgrade, about five and a half (how). Timișoara is closer to Belgrade but much further from Sofia, and Craiova is the natural first Romanian stop coming up from Bulgaria.

The region behind each
This is the part the city-versus-city framing misses, and it is where Craiova's case is strongest.
Craiova is the gateway to Oltenia, and Oltenia is denser in things worth seeing than its reputation. Every distance measured and dated on the Oltenia page: Târgu Jiu 110 km, Horezu 113 km (UNESCO monastery from 1993, pottery craft recognised 2012), Peștera Muierilor 119 km (a whole genome published in *Current Biology* in 2021), Drobeta 113 km along the Iron Gates gorge, Segarcea 29 km for wine.
Timișoara's hinterland is the Banat plain and then the Apuseni, which is good but less concentrated, and the best of it is further away.
Three days in Craiova means two days in Oltenia, and that is a better trip than three days in any single city. Three days in Oltenia.
How they feel
Timișoara feels western. Habsburg layout, a visible Central European inheritance, and since 2023 a certain amount of self-awareness about being looked at.
Craiova feels unvisited, which is the whole appeal if it is the appeal. Nobody is performing for you. The Belle Époque façades on Calea Unirii have not been photographed to death. The downside is the flip side: fewer places geared to visitors, and less English.
Getting between them
They are 343 km and about five hours apart by car, measured with Google Routes on 11 October 2026, via DN6/E70 through Drobeta and up past Caransebeș. That is a long day, not a side trip, so do not plan both in one weekend.
Our actual recommendation
First time in Romania, two or three days: neither. Go to Sibiu or Brașov.
First time in western Romania: Timișoara.
You have seen Timișoara, Sibiu, Brașov: Craiova, and give it three days so Oltenia is included.
Coming from Bulgaria or Serbia: Craiova, on position alone.
You care about Brâncuși, or about a Christmas market without the crowd: Craiova, and it is not a close decision.
Is Craiova worth visiting makes the case at length, including the reasons not to come.
