The short version
Sibiu to Craiova is 228 km and about 3h45 by car, up over the Olt valley and down onto the Oltenian plain. It is the shortest hop between Craiova and any of Romania's established tourist cities, and it is the one pairing that genuinely makes sense as a single trip.
Measured 11 October 2026 with Google Routes from Piața Mihai Viteazul, no traffic. Re-measured once a year.
The route runs DN64 and DN7/E81, which means the Olt valley — the gorge the river cuts through the Carpathians. It is the best-looking main road in southern Romania and the reason this drive is not a chore.
Why pair them at all
Because they are opposites, and three days of one is less interesting than two days of each.
Sibiu is the finished product: a medieval Saxon core, a famous square, the Brukenthal, and enough visitors that the city performs a little. Craiova is unvisited: a nineteenth-century Belle Époque street, six Brâncuși, a 96-hectare park, and nobody photographing any of it.
If you have already done Sibiu and want the second half of the country, this is the natural extension — and is Craiova worth visiting is the honest case, including the reasons not to.

The Christmas market question
This is the pairing's sharpest argument, and the dates do the work.
Craiova's market opens 13 November. Sibiu's opens roughly a fortnight later. For those two weeks, Craiova has the only full market in Romania — lights, stalls and mulled wine, at off-season accommodation prices, with none of the Sibiu crowd. The scheduling and why it happens are in why Craiova opens first.
If you are choosing between the two markets rather than doing both, Craiova or Sibiu for the Christmas market is the direct comparison. If you are doing both, go to Craiova first — it is the only order that works.
Craiova's has twice topped European best-of rankings. The market page has the dates, and accommodation for the market explains the booking window.
By car
228 km, about 3h45, DN64 then DN7/E81.
The Olt valley is the point. The road follows the river through the gorge, past Călimănești and Cozia, and it is genuinely scenic in a way Romanian main roads mostly are not. Allow more time than the number suggests, not because of traffic but because you will stop.
Winter caution. It is a valley road rather than a mountain pass, so it does not close the way a pass does, but it carries weather. Check before setting off in January.
Where you arrive. Craiova's centre is compact and the market closes part of it in December. Park once and walk — where to park in Craiova, and getting around for the rest.

By train
There is a rail connection and it is slower than driving, as it is almost everywhere in Romania. Craiova station is in Piața Constantin Brâncuși, twenty-five minutes' walk east of the centre or a few minutes by taxi — which is the one advantage: you arrive in the city rather than at a ring road.
We do not print timetables we cannot date; check the operator close to your travel date.
By bus
Coaches run the route, they are cheaper, and they are slower. They drop you at the terminal rather than the centre. With two or more people the car wins on both time and money.
What to do when you get there
One day covers the centre, the Art Museum with its six Brâncuși originals, and Calea Unirii: one day in Craiova.
Two days adds Romanescu Park, which is the thing Sibiu has no equivalent of — 96 hectares with a lake, a hippodrome and a suspended bridge. Two days in Craiova and the park guide.
The real reason to come this way
Oltenia, and the fact that Sibiu is not a good base for it while Craiova is.
From Craiova, every distance measured and dated on the Oltenia page: Târgu Jiu 110 km for the Brâncuși ensemble, UNESCO-listed since 2024; Horezu 113 km, a monastery on the list since 1993 and a pottery craft recognised in 2012; Peștera Muierilor 119 km, where a whole genome was published in *Current Biology* in 2021; Drobeta 113 km along the Iron Gates gorge.
Horezu is on your way. Coming from Sibiu down the Olt, you pass close to it — which means the monastery and the pottery can be a stop on the drive rather than a separate day. That is the single most efficient thing in this whole itinerary, and almost nobody does it.
Three days in Oltenia sets out the longer version.
A sensible shape
Sibiu for two days. Drive down the Olt with a stop at Horezu. Two days in Craiova, one of them on a day trip to Târgu Jiu. Home from there, or on south — Sofia is four to five hours and Craiova is the natural stop before it.
