The story
The medieval castle at Drobeta-Turnu Severin, and the town's most-visited sight — which in a town that also holds a Roman bridge pier is worth noting.
It is the other half of what makes Drobeta the one Oltenian destination with enough attached to justify two days. The Roman layer is Trajan's Bridge of 103–105 AD and the castrum that guarded the bridgehead; the medieval layer is this, a fortress on the Danube frontier at a crossing point that mattered to everyone who ever held this stretch of river.
112 km west of Craiova, a measured 1 h 45 min on the best road surface of any long trip from the city. The Iron Gates Region Museum is close by and is what makes the whole site legible rather than a set of stones.
And if you stay the night — which this is the one destination that genuinely rewards — the Danube gorge west of the town, the Iron Gates proper, begins about forty minutes further on and is the most spectacular stretch of river in Romania.
