The short version
Craiova has a small specialty-coffee scene and it is genuinely good — which is not a sentence you could have written about this city ten years ago, and is the kind of thing that changes quietly in Romanian provincial cities without anybody outside noticing.
The whole of it is inside the pedestrianised centre, within a seven-minute walk, and the two things worth knowing are:
- Four or five places take coffee seriously. Coffee Story at 4.9, Harvest and NAO'S at 5.0, Bad Habits at 4.8, Bulldog and Kune at 4.7.
- **The *cofetărie* is a different institution and you want both.** Patiseria Eugenia has the most reviews of any café in the city and is a patisserie as much as a coffee shop.
Checked October 2026. Ratings are from Google and refreshed periodically — they are not paid placements, and the partners page explains what is. No prices and no opening hours on this page: independent cafés in Craiova change both freely and almost none publish a figure you could rely on in a month. The prices page explains the policy.
The specialty places
Coffee Story — Strada Constantin Brâncoveanu 42. A 4.9 from over three hundred reviews, which is the strongest rating-and-volume combination in the city for coffee specifically. If you want one address, this is it.
Harvest Specialty Coffee — Strada Câmpia Islaz 29. A clean 5.0 from over three hundred. A perfect score at that volume is unusual and worth taking seriously.
NAO'S — Strada Tabaci 16a. Also 5.0, from over four hundred reviews, which is the highest volume of the perfect-score group.
Bad Habits — Strada Theodor Aman 1, in the old town. 4.8. Theodor Aman is the street the ExpoFlora flower fair runs along in early June, and this is the café on the corner of it.
Bulldog Specialty Coffee — Strada Împăratul Traian 23. 4.7.
Kune — Strada Lipscani 16. 4.7, and the quietest of the group on a Saturday, which is its own recommendation.
Apple Jack's Daily — Strada Mihai Viteazul 15, thirty seconds from the main square. 4.9 from over two hundred.
That is seven places within a seven-minute walk, all holding 4.7 or better. For a city of this size, outside Bucharest and Cluj, that is more than you have any right to expect.
Places in this piece
The *cofetărie*, which is not the same thing
Romanian cities have a parallel institution that specialty-coffee culture has not replaced, and visiting Craiova without using it would be a mistake.
A cofetărie is a patisserie that serves coffee, rather than a coffee shop that serves cake. The coffee is usually unremarkable; the cakes, the *prăjituri*, the *savarine* and the *amandine* are the point, and the rooms are often unchanged since the 1970s in a way that is now accidentally charming.
Patiseria Eugenia — Strada Mihai Viteazul 17, thirty seconds from Piața Mihai Viteazul. 4.6 from over seven hundred reviews, which is the most of any café in the city. In December, when the Christmas market is in the square and an hour and a half outdoors is the realistic limit, this is the right place to go with cold hands — and that is exactly what it is for.
Leonidas — Strada Alexandru Ioan Cuza 9. The Belgian chocolate franchise, 4.6.
Out in the districts, Cofetăria Damarin in Rovine holds a 4.5 from over five hundred — the second most-reviewed café in the city, and a neighbourhood patisserie that nobody from outside Craiova has ever been to. Cuptorul Cozonacilor, also Rovine, is the other one. Cofetăria Michelle is in Brazda lui Novac.
One honest note: papanași — the fried cheese doughnuts with sour cream and jam that every *cofetărie* in Craiova serves — are Moldovan in origin, not Oltenian. They are excellent and you should eat them. Anyone telling you to come to Craiova *for* them has not thought about it. What to eat in Oltenia sorts out which regional claims are real.

The chains, for completeness
Tucano Coffee Australia on A. I. Cuza holds 4.5 from over three hundred, which is a good score for a chain and reflects a genuinely pleasant room. Bigos Cafe Lounge on Ion Maiorescu is the other central option at 4.4.
Neither is a reason to skip the independents, and both are useful when the independents are full.
Outside the centre
Thin, and that is the honest summary. Craiovița Nouă has three — Ayan, Vibe Caffe and Osso, which does sugar-free and raw vegan cakes and is the only place in the city doing that. Street Cafe is in Lăpuș-Argeș at 4.5 from over three hundred.
Everywhere else has none. If your accommodation is in an outer district, the coffee is a bus ride — see getting around, and consider staying central instead.
How to use this on an actual day
First coffee, before the museums open. The centre at seven or eight in the morning, with the light low on the Calea Unirii facades and the terraces still stacking chairs, is the best version of Craiova there is and almost nobody sees it. In July and August — when the city averages a high of 30.0 °C on 358 hours of sun — this is not an aesthetic preference but the only comfortable part of the day. Beating the summer heat has the rest.
Mid-morning, between museums. The Art Museum with its six Brâncuși originals, the Oltenia Museum and the Ethnographic Museum in Casa Băniei are all within five minutes of every café on this page. One day in Craiova is the timed version of that morning.
Afternoon, in winter. From mid-November to 3 January the market is in the square and the season is built around the room you walk into next. January averages a high of about 2.5 °C on only 131 hours of sunshine and the problem is damp rather than frost — see Craiova in winter.
Not the evening. Cafés here are a daytime institution; after seven the city moves to the terraces and to Strada Traian Demetrescu, which is effectively the drinking street. Craft on Eugeniu Carada is the best-reviewed bar in the city, and Craiova at night carries on from there.
Why a small scene is the interesting thing
It would be easy to write this page as though Craiova had a coffee culture to rival Cluj, and it does not. What it has is five or six people who are serious about it, in a seven-minute radius, in a city with no particular reason to have them — and that is a more interesting fact than a larger scene would be, because you can get round all of it in a morning and compare.
The practical upshot: pick Coffee Story or Harvest for the coffee, Patiseria Eugenia for the cake and the cold hands, and Kune when the first two are full. That is the whole of it, and it is enough.
