The story
The Table of Silence is where the walk starts, and it is the piece visitors most often skip — partly because it is at the far end from the car park and partly because, from a distance, it looks like garden furniture.
A round stone table with twelve stools set around it, by the Jiu at the western end of the 1.3 km axis. The twelve have been read as apostles, as hours, as months; Brâncuși left no explanation, and the honest position is that the number is deliberate and the meaning is not fixed.
What it does structurally is set the register for everything east of it: you begin at something that looks like a place to sit down together, pass through the Gate of the Kiss, and arrive at the Column — a gathering, a passage, an ascent. It only works in that direction.
Made in 1937–38, free, outdoors, part of the UNESCO listing since 2024. Park here rather than at the Column, and give yourself the twenty-five minutes.
