The column is here for one reason: it is two and a quarter hours from Craiova and the July gap is the argument for the drive. Source: Open-Meteo — CERRA regional reanalysis 1991–2020 (Copernicus)
October is September's quieter sibling and in one respect its better. Highs of about 17 °C and 189 hours of sun mean the days are short of warm but entirely workable, and the crowd has gone — prices drop back towards winter levels from the middle of the month.
The reason to come is Romanescu. Ninety-six hectares of mature deciduous trees in a valley turn over about three weeks, and because the park is built on slopes rather than flat ground you can look across the colour instead of standing in it. It is the single best photograph in Craiova and almost nobody is there for it on a weekday.
It is the last comfortable month for the Oltenia day trips, too. After October the monasteries get cold and the mountain roads start to close.
What to know
- The clocks go back on the last Sunday — it is dark by six afterwards.
- Romanescu's colour usually peaks in the second half of the month.
- The Transalpina above Rânca closes for winter — check before planning to drive through.
