The column is here for one reason: it is two and a quarter hours from Craiova and the July gap is the argument for the drive. Source: Open-Meteo — CERRA regional reanalysis 1991–2020 (Copernicus)

The seasonThe Christmas market — open before everyone else's →13 November to 3 January in Piața Mihai Viteazul, about a fortnight ahead of Sibiu and Brașov. Dates, zones and what the city has not announced yet.

In most Romanian cities November is the deadest month of the year. In Craiova it is split in two by a single date.

Until the 13th it behaves as you would expect — about 10 °C, 114 hours of sun, grey, cheap and empty. Then the Christmas market opens in Piața Mihai Viteazul and the city changes completely: lights, stalls, crowds, and hotel prices that jump to December levels overnight.

That fortnight's head start is Craiova's single most useful seasonal fact. Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov do not open until late November, so for about two weeks Craiova has the only major Christmas market running in Romania — and that is also the window in which you can see it without the December weekend crush. The 2026 theme is "Tărâmul elfilor"; the daily opening hours had not been published when we last checked.
