Climate normals 1991–2020 for the centre (≈100 m), from the CERRA regional reanalysis (Copernicus, 5.5 km grid) — a model, not a single weather station. Highs and lows are means of the daily maximum and minimum; a wet day has at least 1 mm of rain, a snow day at least 1 cm of new snow; sunshine is a model estimate. Good weather for a day outOltenia, with every distance measured →Târgu Jiu and the Brâncuși ensemble, Horezu, Tismana, Segarcea and the Danube — how far each one really is, and what we could and could not verify.

If someone asks for one month, this is it. September drops the daily high to about 24 °C, cuts the wet days to seven, and keeps 242 hours of sun — the summer's warmth without the summer's punishment, and the clearest light of the year on the Calea Unirii facades.

It is also the only month when the wine is the reason to come. The harvest at Segarcea runs from late August into September, which is both the busiest and the most interesting time to visit the Crown Estate cellars — and the hardest to get into at short notice, so call well ahead.

Everything else is at its best at the same time. Romanescu in early autumn, the Oltenia day trips without the heat, the terraces still fully open. The only thing September lacks is the Christmas market, and if that is what you want, you want November.
