Climate normals 1991–2020 for the centre (≈100 m), from the CERRA regional reanalysis (Copernicus, 5.5 km grid) — a model, not a single weather station. Highs and lows are means of the daily maximum and minimum; a wet day has at least 1 mm of rain, a snow day at least 1 cm of new snow; sunshine is a model estimate. Summer in the plainWhere the shade is — Romanescu and the alternatives →Ninety-six hectares of old trees and a valley that holds cool air, the Danube an hour south, and Rânca at 1,600 m. The centre has almost no shade at midday.

June is the handover month. The first half still behaves like May; by the second the Oltenian plain has committed, and a daily high of 28 °C with almost no cloud changes how you use the city. The centre has very little shade — Calea Unirii is a sun trap by midday — so the rhythm shifts to early mornings, long middles indoors and late evenings outside.

This is when Romanescu stops being a nice walk and becomes infrastructure. Ninety-six hectares of old trees and a valley floor that holds cool air are the difference between a pleasant afternoon and a wasted one. The Water Park is the other honest answer, and it is what local families actually do.

It is also the month the mountain starts to make sense. Rânca, two and a quarter hours north at about 1,600 m, runs roughly ten to fifteen degrees cooler than the city on the worst days — a fact worth knowing before July rather than during it.
