Climate normals 1991–2020 for the centre (≈100 m), from the CERRA regional reanalysis (Copernicus, 5.5 km grid) — a model, not a single weather station. Highs and lows are means of the daily maximum and minimum; a wet day has at least 1 mm of rain, a snow day at least 1 cm of new snow; sunshine is a model estimate. Summer in the plainWhere the shade is — Romanescu and the alternatives →Ninety-six hectares of old trees and a valley that holds cool air, the Danube an hour south, and Rânca at 1,600 m. The centre has almost no shade at midday.

We are not going to pretend otherwise: July in Craiova is hard. A mean daily high of 30 °C, the sunniest month of the year at 358 hours, and a city centre of stone and asphalt with almost no tree cover. Between about eleven and five, Calea Unirii is not somewhere you want to be walking with a camera.

Plan around it and the month works. Mornings before ten are genuinely pleasant and the light on the Belle Époque facades is at its best then. Middles belong indoors — the Art Museum, the Oltenia Museum, a long lunch. Evenings are the reward: the terraces fill after seven, the fountains run, and the square stays usable until late.

The alternatives are real and they are what locals use. Romanescu's valley is several degrees cooler than the streets. The Danube at Bechet is an hour and five minutes south. Rânca is two and a quarter hours north at 1,600 m. In July, a page about Craiova that does not tell you to leave the centre is not being honest with you.
