Rânca
Craiova's mountain, at 1,600 m, and the start of the Transalpina

The answer to the question every Craiovean asks in August. Rânca sits at around 1,600 metres in the Parâng, which in practice means fifteen degrees cooler than the city on the worst days of summer, and it is the southern gateway to the Transalpina — the highest road in Romania. In winter it is the nearest place to Craiova with lifts and a piste, though on a different scale entirely from the Carpathian resorts.
What to see
The Transalpina
Rânca is where the climb begins. The high section over the Urdele pass closes for winter and does not reopen until late spring — check before you plan to drive through rather than up and back.
Escaping the heat
In July and August this is the single most useful entry on this page for anyone actually living in Craiova. Two and a quarter hours, and a different climate at the end of it.
When to go
Summer for the cool air and the Transalpina; winter for snow, with the caveat that the high road is shut. Spring and late autumn are the awkward months — the pass may be closed and there may be no snow.
What we could not verify
Lift operation, ski-pass prices and the Transalpina's seasonal opening and closing dates are set year by year and are not published far ahead. Check the road's status with the county road authority before driving up in shoulder season.
