Peștera Muierilor
A show cave that produced one of Europe's oldest sequenced human genomes
From Craiova
119 km by road
1 h 53 min driving, no traffic
Measured from Piața Mihai Viteazul on 2026-10-08.
The cave is a straightforward lit walk-through, and that is not why it matters. A skull found here was dated to roughly 35,000 years ago, and in 2021 a team sequenced its genome — one of the oldest from Europe, and a result that reshaped the picture of who was living in this part of the continent and how much Neanderthal ancestry they carried. The guided route is short; the thing you are walking through is not.
What to see
The guided route
About 35–40 minutes, entry and exit at different points, with a 10–15 minute walk back to the car park. Entries are grouped, not continuous — you may wait for the next one.
Whether you should go in at all
Long stretches have a ceiling under a metre and are walked crouching. If you have a bad back or do not like enclosed spaces, this is a genuine warning, not a formality.
Pairing it
Baia de Fier is close to Polovragi and on the same road as Horezu. On its own the cave is not worth a four-hour round trip; as part of a loop it is.
When to go
All year — the cave holds a steady low temperature, so take a jacket even in August. Summer has the longer timetable.
What we could not verify
This is the clearest example on the whole site of why we date our facts. The commune publishes the timetable as a scanned image, and the aggregator sites disagree with each other and with it: adult entry is quoted at both 20 lei and 5 lei, and closing time at 15:00, 16:00, 17:00 and 18:00 depending on where you look. We will not pick one. Phone the commune before you drive two hours.
