The honest starting point
There is no hiking in Craiova. The city sits on the Oltenian plain and there is no hill anywhere in it — which is excellent for cycling and for walking with a pram, and useless for anything with a gradient.
So this is not a page about trails on the city's edge, because there are none worth the name. It is a page about where the hills actually start and how far that is, which is the question underneath the one people ask.
The short answer: two and a quarter hours north, and it is worth the drive.
Rânca, which is the answer
Rânca, 134 km from Piața Mihai Viteazul, sits at roughly 1,600 m on the Transalpina, in the Parâng. That is proper altitude — not a hill, a mountain — and it is Craiova's mountain in the way Poiana is Brașov's.
In summer it is nine degrees cooler than the city, which in an Oltenian July is the entire argument. The plain averages highs around 30 °C with no evening cool-down; Rânca does not. How to escape the heat and the weather page, which has the mountain column month by month.
What is there: open ridge walking above the treeline, the Transalpina itself, a ski piste in winter, and an adventure park with rope courses that makes it work with children — Oltenia with children.
Rânca and the Transalpina is the practical guide.

What to know before going up
It is a full day, not an afternoon. Two and a quarter hours each way means leaving early, and in winter it means checking the road rather than assuming.
The weather up there is not the weather in Craiova. This is the single most common mistake. A mild, foggy morning on the plain can be something entirely different at 1,600 m, in both directions.
Go prepared for a mountain, because that is what it is. Layers, proper footwear, water, and the usual judgement about turning back. Ridge walking above the treeline has no shelter.
We do not publish trail times or marked routes. Nothing in this region maintains a public, dateable record of them, and inventing one for a mountain would be worse than unhelpful — it would be dangerous. The same rule that makes the Oltenia page give phone numbers instead of opening hours applies here with more weight.

The other direction: the cave and the gorge
Peștera Muierilor at Baia de Fier, 119 km, sits where the hills begin on the way to Rânca — and it is a destination in its own right. A skull found there produced a **whole genome published in *Current Biology* in May 2021**, which makes it one of the significant prehistoric sites in Europe.
The cave itself is a guided underground route rather than a walk, but the surrounding country is the first proper landscape north of the plain. Peștera Muierilor.
Tismana, 131 km, sits in wooded hills and is the oldest monastic foundation in Wallachia. It is a contemplative destination rather than a walking one, but the setting is the point. Tismana Monastery and churches and monasteries in Oltenia.
Flat walking, which the plain does do well
If what you want is distance rather than ascent, the region is generous.
The Danube. Bechet at 68 km and Calafat at 89 km are open river country, flat and wide, and a completely different landscape from both the city and the mountain. The Danube near Craiova.
In the city, Romanescu Park is 96 hectares with long made alleys and is the one place you can walk for an hour without touching a road. The park guide.
Getting there
A car is the requirement, not a preference. None of these has useful public transport — that is true of almost everything in Oltenia and it is why the page gives road distances rather than timetables. Hiring a car in Craiova covers renting for the days you leave rather than for the whole stay.
Every distance above is measured from Piața Mihai Viteazul with Google Routes, no traffic, and dated. The roads are national roads rather than motorways, so 119 to 134 km means two hours or more.
When to go
Late spring and early autumn are the seasons: May to June and September to October, before and after the plain's heat. Craiova in spring and in autumn.
July and August are precisely when the altitude is worth most, and precisely when the drive is least pleasant without air conditioning.
Winter turns Rânca into a snow destination rather than a walking one — Craiova with children in winter covers that version.
