Craiova in the rain

The centre is small enough that you are never five minutes from a door. Six Brâncuși in a Belle Époque palace, four cinemas, and the one thing you should not attempt in bad weather.

The short version

Craiova handles bad weather better than it looks, because the centre is small and almost everything indoors is within a quarter of an hour's walk of Piața Mihai Viteazul.

That is the whole trick: you do not need a plan, you need a route that keeps you within five minutes of the next door.

And the bad weather here is usually not rain. The Oltenian plain's signature winter condition is fog — low cloud sitting in the Jiu valley for days at a time. It is grey rather than wet, and it defeats photography rather than walking. The weather page has the month-by-month detail.

The one-hour answer: the Art Museum

If you do one thing, do this. The Art Museum occupies the Jean Mihail Palace on Calea Unirii, four minutes from the main square, and it holds six original Brâncuși works including The Kiss.

That is not a provincial collection with a famous name attached. It is six Brâncuși, in the city where he studied, in a Belle Époque palace — and on a grey afternoon it is the best hour the centre can give you. The full story is in the Art Museum guide and Brâncuși in Craiova.

One caveat we repeat because it matters: it does not publish a dependable timetable online. Ring before you set off.

The rest of the museums

A museum morning plus lunch is a complete wet day, and it is the plan most visitors end up using without being told to.

With children

The indoor answer is Fantasy Park in Craiovița Nouă — a play centre rather than a museum, and the right call when the museum plan has already been spent.

The Natural Sciences museum is the other one that works. For the wider version, Craiova with children and the winter-specific Craiova with children in winter; for dry-day alternatives, playgrounds and parks.

Where to stay nearby

Live prices and availability on a map centred on this exact spot — hotels, apartments and hostels, so you can judge the walk from here rather than guess from an address.

Bookings made through this map earn us a commission. Your price is unaffected.

Coffee, and the Craiova habit of sitting it out

This is a café city, and a wet afternoon is what cafés are for.

Specialty coffee in Craiova has the serious ones; the cafés listing has the rest with live opening status, so you can see what is actually open before you walk. In the centre everything is within a few minutes of the square, which is the point.

For something longer, the old town lanes off Traian Demetrescu are effectively the city's drinking street — the pubs listing and Craiova at night.

Cinema and theatre

Craiova has four cinemas and an unusually strong set of stages for a city this size: the National Theatre "Marin Sorescu", the Oltenia Philharmonic, the Romanian Opera and the Colibri puppet theatre, most of them within the same few central streets.

We do not reproduce their programmes — a season changes and a mirrored listing is out of date within a week — but theatres and cinemas has each venue with its address and a link to its own programme.

Shopping as a weather strategy

Not glamorous, but it is what the city does. Mercur Center on Calea Unirii is in the centre itself and has a cinema on the top floor; Electroputere is on Calea București, eastward, and is the bigger one.

Mercur is the better wet-day choice precisely because it is in the centre — you can fold it into a walk rather than making it the destination.

Eating it out

A long lunch is a legitimate plan. Where to eat in Craiova has the full version; the short one is that the centre is dense enough that you can decide at the door, and that December aside, you rarely need to book days ahead.

If you want the regional argument rather than just a meal, what Oltenians eat explains why the food here is not the same as Bucharest's.

What not to do on a wet day

Do not drive out to Oltenia. The cave, the monasteries and the Brâncuși ensemble are all at their worst in rain — Târgu Jiu's ensemble in particular is a 1.5 km walk along an axis, outdoors, and the whole point of it is the line between the pieces. Save it. Day trips across Oltenia keeps.

Do not count on Romanescu. The park is the city's best asset and the one thing rain genuinely ruins.

If it is fog rather than rain

Different problem. Fog does not stop you walking, it stops you seeing — and the thing Craiova is photogenic for is the Belle Époque façade line along Calea Unirii.

So on a foggy day, swap the order: do the indoor things while it sits, and keep the walk for the afternoon in case it lifts. Craiova in winter has more on living with it.

Frequently asked

What is there to do in Craiova when it rains?

The Art Museum first: it is four minutes from the main square, in a Belle Epoque palace, and holds six original Brancusi works including The Kiss. After that the Oltenia Museum, the Ethnographic Museum in Casa Baniei, the Natural Sciences department, four cinemas, and the cafes along Calea Unirii. The centre is small enough that nothing is more than fifteen minutes' walk.

Does it rain a lot in Craiova?

Less than people expect. The defining bad-weather condition here is not rain but fog: low cloud sits in the Jiu valley for days at a time in winter. It is grey rather than wet, and it ruins photographs rather than walks, which changes what you should plan.

What should you avoid doing in Craiova in bad weather?

Driving out into Oltenia. The cave, the monasteries and especially the Brancusi ensemble at Targu Jiu are all outdoor propositions, and the ensemble is a 1.5 km walk along an axis whose whole point is the line between the pieces. Romanescu Park is the city's best asset and the one rain genuinely ruins.

Is there anything indoors for children in Craiova?

Fantasy Park in Craiovita Noua is the indoor play centre, and the Natural Sciences department of the Oltenia Museum is the museum that works with children. Both are better bets than trying to make a grey afternoon outdoors work.
