The summer heat, and how locals handle it

July and August average a daily high of 30 °C with the sunniest months in Romania, and the centre has almost no shade. Plan the middle of the day indoors — this is the one genuine hazard of a Craiova summer.

The numbers, not the impression

Craiova sits at about 100 metres in the Oltenian plain, with nothing between it and the sun. The thirty-year normals give a mean daily high of 30 °C in both July and August, with 358 hours of sunshine in July — the sunniest month recorded anywhere in the country's major cities. August is drier than July, which removes even the afternoon storms that break the heat.

This is not the pleasant warmth of a Transylvanian summer. It is a plain climate, and between about eleven in the morning and five in the afternoon the centre is genuinely hard work.

Why the centre is worse than the number suggests

Calea Unirii and Piața Mihai Viteazul are stone, asphalt and very little tree cover. There is no river breeze, no hill, no shade from a historic old town built close. The thermometer reading understates how it feels standing in it.

What people who live here actually do

Mornings before ten for anything outdoors. The light on the Belle Époque facades is also at its best then.

The middle of the day indoors. The Art Museum, the Oltenia Museum, a long lunch, an air-conditioned café. This is not laziness; it is the local timetable.

Romanescu Park when you want to be outside. Ninety-six hectares of mature trees in a valley is several degrees cooler than the streets, and it is the single reason the park matters as much as it does.

Water. The Water Park is what local families use. The Danube at Bechet is an hour and five minutes south.

Rânca, two and a quarter hours north at about 1,600 metres, runs ten to fifteen degrees cooler on the worst days. It is the city's standard escape and worth knowing about before July rather than during it.

Evenings are the reward. The terraces fill after seven, the fountains run, and the square stays usable until late.

Practical

Carry water. Wear a hat. Do not plan a walking tour at two in the afternoon in August. If you are driving, check the car's air conditioning actually works before you set off — see getting here.

The flip side: April–May and September–October are excellent, and September in particular is the best month of the Craiova year.
