The column is here for one reason: it is two and a quarter hours from Craiova and the July gap is the argument for the drive. Source: Open-Meteo — CERRA regional reanalysis 1991–2020 (Copernicus)
February is the low point of the calendar and the best value in it. Highs climb to about 5.5 °C, the fog starts to break up, and there is nothing on — no market, no festival, no season. Hotels are at their cheapest and the restaurants on Calea Unirii will seat you without a booking on a Friday.
That emptiness is the case for it. The Art Museum, the Oltenia Museum and Casa Băniei are the kind of places that are better without a group in front of you, and in February you will frequently have a room to yourself. Romanescu under frost, with the lake iced at the edges and nobody on the paths, is a genuinely good walk for anyone who likes a park in winter.
If you are deciding between February and November for a cheap short break: February is colder and emptier, November has the Christmas market opening on the 13th. If price is the only criterion, come now.
What to know
- Lowest hotel rates of the year, including weekends.
- 24 February is Dragobete, the Romanian spring-love day — restaurants fill that evening.
- Check museum winter hours before travelling; several run shorter days until spring.
