If you are choosing a month to see Craiova properly, April and September are the two answers, and April has the edge on greenery. Highs sit around 18 °C, there are 234 hours of sun, and the Oltenian plain is at its best — the point in the year when being outdoors here costs no effort at all.
This is the month for Romanescu. Ninety-six hectares of mature trees coming into leaf, the lake full, the valley green and the paths dry; it is the single best thing to do in Craiova in April and it is free. The Botanical Garden peaks in the same weeks.
It is also the right month for Oltenia. Târgu Jiu, Horezu, Tismana and the Danube all do their worst work in high summer and their best now — the drive is pleasant, the sites are not crowded, and the light is good enough to justify leaving early. Easter usually falls in April and moves prices and crowds with it.
