Sărari
The old low-built quarter immediately north of the centre — the one residential area worth walking through on purpose.
What it is
Sărari is what the city looked like before the blocks: narrow streets, one- and two-storey houses, courtyards, and a scale that has survived immediately north of Calea Unirii. It is five minutes from the main square and almost nobody walks it, which is the recommendation.
There is not much listed here and that is honest — the Colibri Theatre for Children and Youth and Smart Pub, which has more reviews than most places in the centre. The museums people associate with this part of town — the Oltenia Museum and the Ethnographic Museum in Casa Băniei — are just over the line in the centre.
Why it is on this list
Because a half-hour wander here, on the way between the museum quarter and nothing in particular, is the most un-touristed pleasant thing in Craiova, and because the alternative — reading that it is "a vibrant local neighbourhood with hidden gems" — would tell you nothing. There are no hotels, no restaurants worth the walk and no attractions beyond the street itself. Come for the street.
