The short version

Timișoara to Craiova is 343 km and about 5h10 by car — and the route is the reason to do it rather than a thing to endure. It runs DN6/E70 south through Caransebeș and Orșova, down to the Danube, and then along the Iron Gates gorge before turning east across the plain.

Measured 11 October 2026 with Google Routes from Piața Mihai Viteazul, no traffic. Re-measured once a year.

That gorge is the most dramatic stretch of the Danube anywhere, and it means this is one of the few five-hour drives in Romania that people remember fondly.

Break it at Drobeta

Drobeta-Turnu Severin sits at the end of the gorge, 113 km from Craiova, and it is the obvious place to stop — which turns a long transfer into a two-part trip with something in the middle.

What is there: Trajan's bridge, built in the second century, with the Roman piers still standing in the water; the castrum and the medieval fortress a short walk apart; and the Iron Gates Region Museum, which ties the whole thing together.

One correction worth having, because half the internet gets it wrong: the Kinetic Fountain everyone posts photographs of is here, in Drobeta — not in Craiova.

Trajan's bridge at Drobeta and the Danube near Craiova have the background.

Why go at all

Because Timișoara and Craiova are opposites, and the second is the one nobody writes about.

Timișoara is the 2023 European Capital of Culture, with three restored baroque squares and an airport that goes everywhere. Craiova has six original Brâncuși in the Art Museum, the monumental ensemble an hour north at Târgu Jiu on the UNESCO list since 2024, a 96-hectare park, and a Christmas market that opens 13 November, a fortnight before anyone else's.

The full comparison, including when to pick Timișoara instead, is in Craiova or Timișoara.

The practical bits

It is a full day, not a transfer. Five hours of driving plus a stop at Drobeta means leaving in the morning, not after lunch.

The gorge road is slower than the map. It winds, and you will stop. Budget for that rather than being surprised by it.

Winter. The Caransebeș–Orșova section carries mountain weather even though it is not a pass. Check before setting off in January, and remember that Craiova's own winter is fog rather than snow.

Where you arrive. The centre is compact and partly closed in December for the market. Park once and walk — where to park in Craiova and getting around.

Where to stay nearby

Live prices and availability on a map centred on this exact spot — hotels, apartments and hostels, so you can judge the walk from here rather than guess from an address.

The Orșova detour, if you have the time

Between Caransebeș and the gorge the road passes Orșova, which sits where the Cerna meets the Danube and where the river widens into something closer to a lake. It is the point at which the drive stops being a transfer and starts being the reason you came.

There is no need to plan anything here: pull over where the view is, and go on. The whole stretch from Orșova to Drobeta is the part people describe afterwards.

What this route is not

It is not the fast way to southern Romania. If Craiova is simply a waypoint and you want to be in Bucharest tomorrow, the sensible line is further north and east. This drive is worth it when Craiova and Oltenia are the destination, not when they are something to get past.

It is not a winter shortcut either. The gorge road is open year-round but it carries weather, and a five-hour drive in December becomes a long one in the dark. Leave early or split it over two days.

Train, bus, plane

Train: there is a connection and it is slower, as almost everywhere in Romania. Craiova station does at least put you in the city rather than at a ring road. We do not print timetables we cannot date.

Bus: cheaper, slower, terminal to terminal.

Plane: nobody flies it, and you would not want to. Craiova airport matters for coming from abroad — Wizz Air flies London, Madrid, Barcelona, Italy and Germany — rather than for domestic hops.

What to do when you get there

One day does the centre, the Art Museum and Calea Unirii: one day in Craiova.

Two days adds Romanescu Park, which is the thing Timișoara has no equivalent of.

Three is when Oltenia opens up — and since you have already driven past Drobeta on the way in, the obvious remaining targets are Târgu Jiu at 110 km for the Brâncuși axis and Horezu at 113 km for the UNESCO monastery and the pottery. Three days in Oltenia.

A shape that works

Leave Timișoara early. Drive the gorge with a long stop at Drobeta. Sleep in Craiova. Spend the next day in the city, and the one after at Târgu Jiu. Then either home, or carry on south — Sofia is four to five hours and Craiova is the natural stop before the border.
