Cluj to Craiova

Five and a half hours, too long to do blind. Coming down the Olt you pass close to Horezu — so a UNESCO monastery becomes a stop on the drive rather than a separate day.

The short version

Cluj to Craiova is 401 km and about 5h20 by car, down DN64 through the Olt valley. It is the longest of the inbound routes we cover, and the honest advice is that it is a full day with a good reason in the middle rather than a transfer to endure.

Measured 11 October 2026 with Google Routes from Piața Mihai Viteazul, no traffic. Re-measured once a year.

The second half of it — the Olt gorge, where the river cuts through the Carpathians — is the best-looking main road in southern Romania, and it is the stretch that makes this drive worth planning rather than minimising.

Break it, and break it at the right place

Five and a half hours is too long to do blind, and the route hands you two obvious stops.

Horezu is the one to take. Coming down the Olt you pass close to it, which means a UNESCO monastery listed since 1993 and a pottery craft recognised by UNESCO in 2012 become a stop on the drive rather than a separate day out of Craiova. Almost nobody does this and it is the most efficient thing in the whole itinerary. Hurezi Monastery and Horezu ceramics.

The Olt valley itself — Călimănești, Cozia — is the other, and it needs no plan. Stop where the view is.

Why come at all

Cluj is Romania's other big university city and in most respects the better-provided one: more flights, more restaurants, more scene. Craiova is not competing on that and should not pretend to.

What Craiova has that Cluj does not: six original Brâncuși in the Art Museum, his monumental ensemble an hour south at Târgu Jiu on the UNESCO list since 2024, a 96-hectare landscaped park, a Christmas market that opens 13 November — a fortnight before Sibiu, Bucharest and Brașov — and prices noticeably below both Cluj and Bucharest.

Is Craiova worth visiting makes the case properly, including when the answer is no.

Is the distance the point against it?

Partly, and it is worth being straight about. 401 km is far enough that Craiova is never going to be a casual weekend from Cluj the way Sibiu or Alba Iulia are.

What changes the arithmetic is what sits at the other end. You are not driving five and a half hours for a city — you are driving it for a region, and Oltenia packs more into a 120 km radius than its reputation suggests: two UNESCO entries, a cave with a published genome, Roman bridge piers in the Danube, and a wine estate. None of that is reachable in a day from Cluj, and all of it is from Craiova.

So the honest framing is: do not come for two nights. Come for four, use the drive as part of the trip, and treat Horezu on the way down as the first stop rather than a detour.

By train and bus

Train: the connection exists and it is long. Romanian rail is slower than driving on almost every route and this is not an exception. Craiova station at least puts you in Piața Constantin Brâncuși, twenty-five minutes' walk from the centre, rather than at a ring road. We do not print timetables we cannot date.

Bus: cheaper, slower, terminal to terminal.

Plane: there is no sensible domestic hop. Craiova airport matters for arriving from abroad — Wizz Air flies London, Madrid, Barcelona, Italy and Germany among others — not for crossing Romania.

Practical notes for the drive

Leave early. 5h20 plus a stop at Horezu is the whole day, and you want to arrive in daylight.

Winter. The Olt is a valley road rather than a mountain pass, so it does not close the way a pass does, but it carries weather. Craiova's own winter is fog rather than snow — low cloud sitting in the Jiu valley for days — which reduces visibility on the final flat stretch. Craiova in winter and the weather page.

Summer. The last hour crosses the Oltenian plain, where July and August average highs around 30 °C with no evening cool-down. Air conditioning matters more than it sounds: how to escape the heat.

Arriving. The centre is compact and partly closed in December for the market. Park once and walk in — where to park in Craiova and getting around.

What to do when you arrive

One day: the centre, the Art Museum, Calea Unirii. One day in Craiova.

Two: add Romanescu Park, which is the thing Cluj has no equivalent of.

Three or more: Oltenia opens up, and since Horezu is already done on the way in, the remaining targets are Târgu Jiu at 110 km for the Brâncuși axis, Peștera Muierilor at 119 km, and Drobeta at 113 km along the Iron Gates. Three days in Oltenia.

A shape that makes the distance worth it

Leave Cluj early. Stop at Horezu — monastery and pottery, two hours. Arrive in Craiova for the evening. Give the next day to the city, and the one after to Târgu Jiu. Then either back the same way, or onward south: Sofia is four to five hours and Craiova is the natural stop before the border.

If you want a shorter version of the same idea, Sibiu to Craiova is 228 km and covers the best half of this route.

Frequently asked

How far is Craiova from Cluj?

401 km and about 5h20 by car, measured with Google Routes on 11 October 2026 without traffic, down DN64 through the Olt valley. It is the longest of the inbound routes, so treat it as a full day with a stop rather than a transfer.

Where should I stop between Cluj and Craiova?

Horezu. Coming down the Olt you pass close to it, so a UNESCO monastery listed since 1993 and a pottery craft recognised in 2012 become a stop on the drive rather than a separate day trip from Craiova. Almost nobody does this and it is the most efficient thing in the itinerary.

Is the train from Cluj to Craiova worth it?

Only if you specifically want to avoid driving. Romanian rail is slower than the car on almost every route and this is no exception. The station does at least put you in Piata Constantin Brancusi, twenty-five minutes' walk from the centre, rather than at a ring road.

What does Craiova have that Cluj does not?

Six original Brancusi works in the Art Museum and his monumental ensemble an hour south at Targu Jiu, UNESCO-listed since 2024; a 96-hectare landscaped park; a Christmas market that opens on 13 November, a fortnight before everyone else's; and prices noticeably below both Cluj and Bucharest.
